About this audiobook

Most of us have heard of gluten—a protein found in wheat that causes widespread inflammation in the body. Americans spend billions of dollars on gluten-free diets in an effort to protect their health. But what if we've been missing the root of the problem? In The Plant Paradox, renowned cardiologist Dr. Steven Gundry reveals that gluten is just one variety of a common, and highly toxic, plant-based protein called lectin. Lectins are found not only in grains like wheat but also in the "gluten-free" foods most of us commonly regard as healthy, including many fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans, and conventional dairy products. Once ingested, these proteins incite a kind of chemical warfare in our bodies, causing inflammatory reactions that can lead to weight gain and serious health conditions.

At his waitlist-only clinics in California, Dr. Gundry has successfully treated tens of thousands of patients suffering from autoimmune disorders, diabetes, leaky gut syndrome, heart disease, and neurodegenerative diseases with a protocol that detoxes the cells, repairs the gut, and nourishes the body. Now, in The Plant Paradox, he shares this clinically proven program with listeners around the world.

PROS: Dr. Gundry's analysis is extremely thorough. Based on his education, training and expertise, I trust that the information and recommendations for how to live a healthier and longer life are based on solid research. CONS: Information overload. Hyper, hyper, hyper technical. But for the audio version of this book, I would have struggled to get through it. I found the scientific minutia a bit too much for what I wanted to get out of the book. Definitely worth a listen. I also purchased a hardcopy of the book as a reference guide for making his recommended lifestyle changes.

This book seems interesting but I wonder if the narrator is actually a robot. It seems unfamiliar with words. It breaks up phrases awkwardly, as if it is unfamiliar with English language punctuation, and accents words incorrectly. This makes the book a chore to listen to. The publisher needs to find a human narrator who has grown up around standard English and knows how to speak it. I will look for a used copy to buy online and read since the publisher has already made its money off of me.

I have been seeing a holistic doctor and she recommended this book to me as a lifestyle change for my eating habits. Not going to lie, I'm a little skeptical about all this but I'm willing to give it a try. Gundry does make some farfetched assertions about the benefits of his program, especially when he's also hocking his name brand version of the supplements he wants you to be on.

While there is some useful information in this book, the conclusion that an expensive diet is the solution does not match other facts that I've learned. His audience seems to be an upper class white European, a person who has no problem with industrialization and globalization. Yes, our health issues are not our fault. The solution is not more industrialization and processing of foods. There isn't one solution, but the solution certainly is not more of what caused the problem in the first place (industrialization and agriculture). We need to restore land, restore soil, restore living in balance with the world around us. There are better books that look at a bigger picture to see what needs to change. The solution certainly isn't one of making better personal food choices. We need to stop those who are poisoning the land and our food. We need systematic changes. All that said, I do think he is correct on much of what he says in this book. And the food plan listed does look healthy. The problem I have with it is that it is expensive and requires globalization and industrialization. This isn't a solution for the average person. We need to heal our entire communities rather than focusing on those with the money to follow an expensive diet.

One of the most informative, interesting, and mind blowing books I’ve ever read! I read books on nutrition and health often and this is by far my very favorite book to date! I Love love LOVE all the information it provides! This book has 100% changed my life. And the lives of my loved ones. We’re happier and it’s because we’re healthier. My 80yr old grandfather has completely reversed his kidney disease following this book (and the plant paradox cook book) I’ve lost 66lbs and have never felt better! Seriously, it’s worth the read. Even if you only follow a few of the things, it will still change your life! I didn’t have to do a crazy lifestyle change or harsh dieting. I just learned about the foods that are no good and contoured my personal lifestyle and eating habits (very slightly) and WOW what a difference just a few small changes has made. I will be 31 years old in a few weeks. I don’t have any real health issues, I’ve just become over weight in the last 3 years. But Seriously, after you start to feel better and look better you’ll WANT to keep these changes going and likely make more. I can’t say enough positive things about this book and what it teaches. Thank you from myself and my family!

Lots of good food science information.

I'm not so sure about the lectin hook. Likely a good protocol for illnesses, but not essential for the general population? There doesn't seem to be a lot of support from other experts in the field on the fact that lectins are the secret enemy.

Listen at 1.2x speed! The narrator is very monotone!

Narrator sounded very robotic and boring. I much prefer the idea of The China Study to the concept of this idea

Very good content. Very boring reading by the narrator. Get Dr. Gundry to read it himself.
