About this audiobook

Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles—the inspiration for the smash hit TNT series—continue their bestselling crime-solving streak, as they pursue a shadowy psychopath keeping secrets and taking lives.

Two separate homicides, at different locations, with unrelated victims, have more in common than just being investigated by Boston PD detective Jane Rizzoli and medical examiner Maura Isles. In both cases, the bodies bear startling wounds—yet the actual cause of death is unknown. It’s a doubly challenging case for the cop and the coroner to be taking on, at a fraught time for both of them. As Jane struggles to save her mother from the crumbling marriage that threatens to bury her, Maura grapples with the imminent death of her own mother—infamous serial killer Amalthea Lank.

While Jane tends to her mother, there’s nothing Maura can do for Amalthea, except endure one final battle of wills with the woman whose shadow has haunted her all her life. Though succumbing to cancer, Amalthea hasn’t lost her taste for manipulating her estranged daughter—this time by dangling a cryptic clue about the two bizarre murders Maura and Jane are desperately trying to solve.

But whatever the dying convict knows is only a piece of the puzzle. Soon the investigation leads to a secretive young woman who survived a shocking abuse scandal, an independent horror film that may be rooted in reality, and a slew of martyred saints who died cruel and unusual deaths. And just when Rizzoli and Isles think they’ve cornered a devilish predator, the long-buried past rears its head—and threatens to engulf more innocent lives, including their own.

This one was a real stretch. The plot was all over the map. Serial killer in present linked to 20 year old satanic panic daycare case. And too many red herrings to shake a stick at.

A psychopath is picking off targets one by one in Tess Gerritsen's stunning novel, "I Know a Secret." Twenty-six year old Cassandra Coyle was a filmmaker whose assailant murdered and mutilated her, but left no visible injuries. Detective Jane Rizzoli of the Boston PD and her partner, Barry Frost, are assigned to the case. Medical examiner Maura Iles conducts the autopsy, but cannot, at first, determine the cause of death. When another murder occurs with eerie similarities to the first one, Maura again conducts the postmortem. This time, she cleverly figures out how the perpetrator is dispatching his victims.

The author juggles a variety of plots and subplots adroitly, inserts passages of grim humor, horrifies us with backstories of disturbed people behaving brutally, and explores such controversial themes as the reliability of children's repressed memories. We revisit Jane's beleaguered mother, Angela, who rashly took her husband back after he cheated on her. In addition, Maura reconsiders her decision to cut off contact with the man she loves. As if this were not enough to hold our attention, we are confronted with a first-person narrator who is a cold-hearted sociopath, cunning liar, and unabashed narcissist.

"I Know a Secret" mesmerizes us from its absorbing opening chapter through its chilling finale. Gerritsen wastes no words, delineates key characters with deft strokes, enlivens each scene with vivid figurative language, and moves her well-crafted story along swiftly and satisfyingly. In addition, she does not pacify us with feel-good solutions. This tale of cruelty, heartache, and deceit demonstrates that, at its worst, life can be messy, painful, and grossly unjust. Jane and Maura are dedicated and tenacious professionals; they do everything possible to see that the bad guys are punished. If they fail, and they sometimes do, it is not for lack of trying. "I Know a Secret" is a must-read for thriller fans and one of the best works by Tess Gerritsen to date.

    Tess Gerritsen never disappoints!

I’ve read all of her books, and loved all the Rizzoli & Isles books even before they became a TV-series. Each one of her books is masterfully plotted, written in a highly descriptive style, that makes it seem like you’re reading (or listening to with audiobooks) a movie and her storyline is always so fast-paced, that it is like a joy ride, cause she doesn’t waste any time pulling you in! It’s always “one more chapter..” with Tess’ books and this latest R&I one in the series was a page turner as well. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

(If you’re new to her books and you don’t want to commit to the entire Rizzoli & Isles series just yet, but you’d like to get to know the author’s way of storytelling, I’d suggest trying out “The Bone Garden”. It’s what got me hooked ..)

Book twelve in the series to feature Detective Jane Rizzoli and Forensic Pathologist Maura Isles. This case they investigate a series of murders that also link to a case going back twenty years.I have read the complete series of these books in order which is something I prefer to do. It gives me chance to know the characters and their lives. With this book it wouldn't make any difference, its just something I prefer.Like all book series there are good and not so good stories, and some of the books I have enjoyed and some are just so so. This outing however is one of the better ones. The story is very engaging, with a very different way in which the victims are found dead. The story kept my interest and although the ending was a little predictable I quite enjoyed it. The story has plenty of blood and gore both on and off the mortuary table. There is also the character's personal lives to follow with the ups and downs of Jane's parents and Maura and Daniel's love life dilemma. One character who I would like to see more of is Gabriel, Jane's husband. He's always mentioned so maybe it might be nice to see his character more involved rather than just reading Regina the bedtime story.Another good offering from Tess Gerritsen and I highly recommend her books.

Rizzoli and Isles win again. This time adults who, as children, accused their day care guardians of child abuse are getting killed...by very different means. It takes a priest to figure out the basis for these killings and the Rizzoli and Isles duo to figure out the perpetrator. An easy quick read. Not the bests; not the worst.

I know the premise of the long-running Rizzoli & Isles tv show though I never watched it. But I was in the mood for a mystery and grabbed this book to read, having read the author's The Bone Garden.Jane Rizzoli is a detective and Maura Isles is a pathologist in Boston. They are both called to the scene of the murder of a young woman who is dead from no apparent cause and whose eyeballs have been scooped out and placed in her hand. The investigation leads to a case from twenty years previously, several more murders, and some very interesting twists and turns.I do like books where I get clues to decide on the murderer but keep getting new information that sends me off in a new direction. It's even better when I don't figure out the ending. I Know a Secret delivers on all counts. I was so sure I knew where it was going and I was completely wrong (well, I did get a few things correct but not the ending). I also liked the main characters. Jane is stubborn but thorough and Maura is a scientist who relies only on what the science can tell her. Frost is a fun sidekick, and the rest of the family characters add to the personal backgrounds of Rizzoli and Isles. The bad guys are remorseless and based on the McMartin child abuse trial in the 1980s. It's a quick and thoroughly satisfying read.

Wow. Just wow. While the last few books in this series were easy to figure before the end, Gerritsen delivered an unexpected left hook in this tale. Just wow.

This is another of Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles books. It took me a couple of chapters to get into this one but the chapters are short.
I do not want to give away too much but this one has a biblical theme of a sort. The people getting killed as you can guess all have a secret. They all grew up in the Catholic Church. So this involves the Staints from the Catholic Church and how they all died.
I figured out who was the murderer before the ending but there is a twist to this that comes out at the very end that I was not expecting. Very good may I say Tess Gerritson. Good job on that one.
This is rather gruesome. So if you do not like that don't read this book. I hated to put it down but I have too many other things that need done. Starting my next read. But for all of you readers this one is worth the read.

I acquired this novel not knowing of the eleven which came before it and fell perfectly into the tale. The small references as to what happened prior to this book were inconsequential to the story yet provided a layer of identity to regulars such as Isles, Rizzoli and their close relationships. In this particular story, murders are being committed against young adults whose only connection seems to be the fact they attended the same after-school care facility 20 years ago. Gerritsen writes a very intriguing tale with enough red herrings to make many possible perpetrators smell fishy but in the end the puzzled reader will be satisfied with the conclusion. It's a very good and fast moving read.

I really enjoy this series. The characters are well fleshed out and there is always something happening that puts both Jane and Maura in danger. Or at least more has been revealed about their personal lives. I do notice that a lot of times these books take place when it's cold out. But this is another one that has all kinds of twists and reveals that you don't know what really happened until the end. It makes you realize there are some really sick people out there. This story also sounds familiar to me. I feel like Tess pulled this from the news and put her own spin on it. It you like murder mysteries, this is a series that should not be avoided. Start with book one because you will not want to miss any part of what is going on in the lives of Rizzoli & Isles.

In this latest Rizzoli and Isles mystery, the book opens with the death of a young woman Cassandra Coyle who is lying in her bed with her eyeballs in her hand. When Maura Isles does the autopsy she finds no cause of death. There is a little bit of wine in her stomach so she had a drink right before she died. Cassandra was a filmmaker who made horror movies. Well, she'd made one and was working on finishing another one that was based on something that happened in her childhood. Then on Christmas Eve Timothy McDougal is found propped up against a pole at the docks with his shirt off and three arrows sticking out of his chest. But the arrows were shot into him after he was already dead. His body was healthy and Maura could find no cause of death, just some whiskey in his stomach. Cassandra's tox screen came back with a little bit of ketamine in her system. But only enough to knock her out, not kill her. And ketamine comes back in Timothy's tox screen as well. That's when Maura gets the idea of how they might have died from the Heaven's Gate people. By placing a plastic bag over the face. She does find residue of tape on Timothy's neck, but no signs of bruising that would show that force was used or a fight like he was being restrained. She also figures out why they were displayed the way they were. Cassandra was displayed as St. Lucy and Timothy was displayed as St. Sebastion. The question is why and is there more? Maura goes to Daniel, the priest with whom she had a long affair with but broke it off over six months ago, for help with the case which is hard on both of them. Also Maura's birth mother, a serial killer, who is dying in jail and is reaching out to Maura and she goes to see her say goodbye, but her mother is not done with her manipulations. Maura goes through a lot in this book and Jane is trying to be there for her if Maura would just let her. This is a really good book with lots of twists. While the plot is great it's the characters that you read it for and what they are going through and how they are dealing with what is going on around them and Gerritsen excels at this, as this book shows. I highly recommend this book.

Boston PD detective Jane Rizzoli and medical examiner Maura Isles are back. This latest series entry finds the duo investigating a series of deaths that don't seem to be related, and in fact don't even seem to be murders. But Isles serial-killer mother, dying of cancer while serving a life sentence, tips her daughter off to dig deeper. When they do, Rizzoli and Isles find the elusive connection far in the past, when the current victims were just children, who accused their daycare provider of horrific abuse. Multiple POVs kept the story moving even when R&I weren't around, and the whodunit was satisfying. My only concern is that this appears to set the stage for a series of books wherein the good guys attempt to catch the same devious killer, which I often find tiresome by book two or three. I hope I'm wrong.

First, thank you to NetGalley for an e-book copy of this novel for my enjoyment and review. This is another in Gerritsen's series of Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles, and a very easy one to get right into and completely enjoy. Many twists and turns, as it starts off fast and furious with Maura seeing her long-estranged and dying mother in the ICU, who has been imprisoned many years for multiple murders. The reader can see that there may be a connection between what her mother knows, and a recently discovered, bizarre murder that Jane and Maura must solve. You will enjoy this one, I promise - thanks Ms. Gerritsen for another enjoyable mystery.

I Know a Secret is the twelfth book in Tess Gerristsen's celebrated Rizzoli and Ives series. For those of you who haven't read this series yet (?!) - the two female leads are Boston PD detective Jane Rizzoli and her friend, Boston medical examiner Maura Isles. This latest case is a puzzler. Two bodies with no cause of death that Isles can detect. They've both been posed after death in unusual circumstances. Rizzoli is having just as hard a time finding a connection between the two.But there is one - and I have to say - it's clever. Using actual crimes as a starting point, Gerritsen has created an inventive plotline. Tess keeps the reader guessing with many players to choose from for the final whodunit. She skilfully manipulates the reader's thinking with dialogue and actions from many that are 'suspicious'. One of those characters is given a voice and chapters of her own. These chapters are 'teasers' with actions and motives being slowly doled out. I did have my suspicions, but was happy to find that I wasn't completely right at the end. And that ending leaves the door cracked open for further stories....The personal lives of these two leads, as well as the supporting cast, are just as much of draw for me as the main plot is in this series. Their lives have moved along in real time, with a few somewhat startling threads. (Maura's mother is something else....) Their human quirks, ruminations, successes and failures only serve to make them more 'real'. The dynamic between the two leads is believable and enjoyble.Gerristen's take on the medical aspects of her books is excellent, a she herself is a licensed doctor.I Know a Secret can absolutely be read as a stand alone, but the evolution of this pair is worth reading from the first book, The Surgeon. An entertaining, enjoyable read for me - and one of the best of the twelve.

"I Know a Secret" does not disappoint as Tess Gerritsen's latest Rizzoli and Isles novel. Weaving together both Jane and Maura's points of view, as well as that of a third person who remains unknown until the denouement, Gerritsen keeps the reader's interest captivated. Current murders turn out to be eerily symbolic and tied to another crime that occurred two decades earlier. How they are related has profound consequences on both the past and the present, revealing that not everyone is who they seem to be. This is another great page-turner from a well-established master of the genre!

I Know a Secret – Classic Rizzoli and IslesTess Gerritsen has brought back her fabulous crime fighting due of Rizzoli and Isles, cleaning the streets of Boston up one crime at a time. What makes Rizzoli and Isles thrillers so great? Easy! Gerritsen’s clever plotting and the medical knowledge is second to none, her characters have depths and the writing is outstanding, the prose just draws you in.I Know A Secret is proof why her books are eagerly anticipated as you know you are going to have a rollercoaster a ride of a thriller, with more twists and turns than an average game of twister. There is such brilliant imagery in Gerritsen’s writing, she is able to bring the pages alive, and the reader feels as if they are part of the investigation team on one side, and inside the mind of the killer on the other.A call out to a murder scene to a house which is decorates with horror movie posts, and where the victim has been stages in a particular way as if sending a message. With no obvious cause of death, they need to get further but neither Isles or Rizzoli can see what this body is telling them. With clues to the murder not clear, they need something that will point them in the right direction, and it is the religious element of the murder that might just send them the right way. It is when they discover that their murder is not the first with ritualistic overtones do they now know what to look for.As their investigation continues it leads them to a 20-year-old case and a released prisoner, who is now out, and clearly looking for revenge, so it seems. Only one woman knows that the killer is coming for her and who it really is, but she knows the only way to stay safe is to keep her mouth shut and not talk of events from twenty years prior. Will that be enough to save her? She certainly hopes so and she certainly does not want Rizzoli to know the truth as her life depends on it.This is suspense at its best, where the reader is taken on a ride of their life, that will leave them breathless. Once you start I Know A Secret you certainly will not want to put the books down as it is gripping and shows Tess Gerritsen to be at the top of her game. Read this and you might not look at some saints in the same light again.

Unlike another well known mystery series author, I am still up to date with Rizzoli and Isles, and so I was eagerly awaiting this book to get my R&I fix now that the TV show is over. Since the first couple of books in the series the novels have gone up and down and I do think that this one was on the up swing (even though it has Daniel Brophy in it).The body that Rizzoli & Isles get called to is a young woman and horrifically gruesome. And soon it's not the only dead body they're investigating. And again, Rizzoli and Isles are knee deep in quite a case that goes all twisty and turney almost from the beginning. There's also some parts of the novel that are told by someone with a connection to the mystery, but we're not sure what it is until near to the end. (Or I wasn't totally sure how she'd connect at least). There's also some family drama for both of the ladies. Maura and her birth mother have another go-round, and then there's Angela Rizzoli. The book Angela has always been so different from the TV Angela (probably have Lorraine Bracco to thank for that. Thank you Ms. Bracco). And so this subplot with Angela was an awesome breath of fresh air.It was a good read. Neither the mystery/thriller nor the family subplots overwhelmed the other. There was Brophy in it, ugh, but it didn't seem to suck the novel down as having him in it usually does (sorry, can you tell that I don't like Father Daniel Brophy at all, or am I being too subtle?) I still miss the TV show a little bit, but, this particular book in the series filled that hole a bit.I was given this ARC by Netgalley on behalf of Ballantine Books.

One of my favorite things about Tess Gerritsen's writing is her ability to create characters that feel like they could walk right off the pages. Even her minor characters have complex personalities and full lives. With Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles, we have two women who excel in their careers. They both have a firm sense of right and wrong, though they occasionally stumble in the gray areas. The family dynamics in both their lives ensure they don't feel like caricatures or superheroes, but more like real life working women. The plot ventures into some dark corners, though this is well balanced with the lighthearted banter and comical family moments. I had part of the later twist figured out, which is more a product of reading a whole lot within this genre rather than any fault of the author. Still, some aspects surprised me and I thoroughly enjoyed the story's execution. I also love the way Gerritsen tackles the controversy surrounding Maura's romance. I don't want to risk spoilers for those unfamiliar with this ongoing storyline, so I won't give specifics. But the turmoil of this forbidden love is handled beautifully and could be a topic of discussion all its own. While the 12th in a series, I think this book reads well as a stand-alone. Enough background on the characters is given for new readers to understand the history and relationships. If you're new to the books but had watched the TV series, you'll find the relationships are slightly different here. *I was provided with an advance ebook copy by the publisher, via NetGalley, in exchange for my honest review.*
