- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Kaylee Ramay is on the run from a dangerous criminal mastermind and finds herself in Monroe, Colorado, with a new name, no home, and no job. Now Grace Robinson, she finds herself living with another family also on the run. Grace finds a job working at a kennel and cleaning up dog poo which is quite a change from her previous position as a fund raiser for a college. In Monroe, she meets Hugh Murdoch who is a police officer on medical leave until he heels from a gunshot wound to his thigh. Hugh is bored and decides that uncovering Grace's secrets would be just the thing to fill in his time until he can go back on duty.Grace is scared but strong. She also quickly fits in and finds Monroe and Hugh a good fit for her. Hugh is a complete goofball. His care-free, talkative, and rather annoying personality hides a serious and smart police officer though. When the two of them suffer a number of close calls and near fatal accidents it isn't clear whether Hugh or Grace is the actual target. When Grace shares her secret and trusts Hugh, they figure out why they are being targeted. This story is packed with action laced with a good amount of humor. It also has a nicely hot relationship between Grace and Hugh. Fans of romantic suspense won't want to miss this second book in the Rocky Mountain K-9 Unit series.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Kaylee has moved to same small town in the Rockies that Jules in Book 1 Run To Ground moved to. She changes her name to Grace and begins her life over. She is nervous that Jules has cops as friends and one of those cops is Hugh who is determined to find out her secrets. Hugh is very entertaining. He is on medical leave due to an injury but finds plenty of time to get himself and Grace in sticky situations. I seem to be in the minority as I read books just to enjoy the story as opposed to those that read them then tell us what they would have done in each situation. Are there things in this story that I would have done different than it was written, probably, but it didn't change how much I loved this story.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I enjoyed the characters and the banter and the understanding they have of each other.
Some of it is a little unbelievable for a small town but that did not diminish my enjoyment of this series. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5On the Chase is the second novel in the Rocky Mountain K9 Unit series. At the start of this story we meet Kaylee who is dating a man that she thinks to be perfect. Her best friend though feels otherwise about him. Kaylee should have listened to her best friend’s wisdom because while at a dinner hosted at her date’s relatives Kaylee stumbles upon a horrifying situation. I really enjoyed the start of this story because it amped up the story’s suspense element.Kaylee soon finds that she has to “disappear” and start a whole new life as “Grace.” Her character did not take the transition well but luckily, she was placed in a town where there was a family in a similar situation. Kaylee’s character to me was a wee bit whiney. At the same time though, I kind of get it that the situation is unfair and living at one level of comfort then dropping to an entirely other one would be disheartening. In the end, yeah didn’t love or hate this character. In her new life as “Grace,” Kaylee is introduced to the local law enforcement via her roommate, who happens to be dating one of the local officers (their story can be found in book 1, Run to Ground). Grace of course wants nothing to do with the police but finds herself at the attention of Hugh Murdoch. After being shot in the line of duty, Hugh has too much time on his hands and is usually showing up at crime scenes. When he discovers that there is a new woman in town who is obviously hiding the truth about herself, he makes it his business to find out what he can about this “Grace” character.Hugh might not trust that Grace is telling the truth but he does find himself strangely attracted to her. Not sure if she is on the run because of her actions or that of another person, Hugh makes sure to keep close tabs on Grace. Now this portion of the story may rub some readers wrong because Hugh steps over some privacy lines and is compared to that of a stalker. I let it slide because it was very obvious that Grace was hiding things and he was concerned about her endangerment potential to his partner’s love interest and her young siblings. It did not take away from the story for me. As things heat up for Grace so does the relationship between Grace and Hugh. As the danger increases it becomes unclear if it is Grace or Hugh being targeted for elimination. Together they must ferret out the clues and put an end to the attempts on their lives.I really enjoyed reading On the Chase. I thought the relationship that developed between Hugh and Kaylee, “Grace,” was built on more than just sexual attraction. There is a bond that develops between these two characters and although it does lead very quickly to something rather serious, it is not over the top. I absolutely love the inclusion of the canine, Lexi, her part was written perfectly. Overall, this was an entertain read that had the perfect blend of mystery, suspense, romance and humor. It was a good read! This review is based on a complimentary book I received from NetGalley. It is an honest and voluntary review. The complimentary receipt of it in no way affected my review or rating.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/52nd book in this series and I liked it even more than book 1.
This book follows the second member of the K9 team Hugh, and a young woman on the run from a criminal family Kaylee/Grace.
Kaylee gets a new identity from the same source that helped Jules in Book 1. Now named Grace, she moves in with Jules and her family - and almost immediately meets Hugh. And the sparks fly!
Nice romance, some suspense and danger, very minor mystery. Overall a light and fun read. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Kaylee has moved to same small town in the Rockies that Jules in Book 1 Run To Ground moved to. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I liked this book. It wasn't perfect but it was definitely entertaining. I really enjoyed the first book in this series, Run to Ground, when I read it a few months ago so I was pretty excited to read Hugh's story. It was a pretty fast read for me since I had a rather hard time actually setting the book aside. The book opens with Kaylee in her old life. She witnesses a horrifying crime and becomes a target herself. In order to stay safe, she changes her identity and starts all over. Kaylee, or Grace as she is now called, moves in with Jules and her four siblings. I was really happy to see all of the wonderful characters from the first book of the series having such an important role in this book. Grace is slow to adjust to her new life because she is living in constant fear.Hugh is on leave as he recovers from a bullet wound and he is driving everyone crazy. He keeps showing up and getting involved in things when he is supposed to be resting. He thinks that Grace is being completely honest from the first moment he meets her. He becomes determined to find out what her real story is. So like I said earlier this book wasn't perfect. Hugh crossed a few lines that kind of bothered me. It was like the man had no boundaries. A locked door....no problem, because he would find a way to get in anyway. This kind of behavior seemed to happen quite a bit at the beginning of the book but did lessen as the story progressed. I think that Grace let him off a little too easy a couple of times in the book.I did like Grace and Hugh together. Grace is honest with Hugh about her past as soon as it becomes a safety issue and then they really do start to become a team. There were some pretty exciting scenes in the book that really had my pulse pounding. They did have great chemistry with each other and I really enjoyed their banter. I would recommend this book to others. I enjoyed this action packed romance with wonderful chemistry between the characters. I am looking forward to reading more in the great series from Katie Ruggle very soon.I received an advance reader edition of this book from Sourcebooks Casablanca via NetGalley.
