I struggled with this book more than I should. I have already read some other mysteries by Andrea Kane, they weren’t my favourites, but they were acceptable.
Let’s start with the good things, I really appreciate the plotline. It’s worthy of note, it’s twisted and I was truly involved in it for most of the time. Gia discovers that she has a twin sister Dani and just after that both young women are in danger. First, Dani’s childhood photos are stolen, then someone puts a fire under Gia’s home. Scared women ask for help Forensic Instincts, a privet team of investigators. As I said, I find this part well-done.
Unfortunately, the story is soooo slow. Nothing happens up to half of the book. The whole story drags on page after page. First, there is this Brianna case – which could be interesting on it’s own but it’s too simple to be truly remarkable. But it takes time to go through this introductive subplot. Then we are waiting while Gia and Dani slowly make connection and in the meantime keep an eye on their everyday life. It’s just too much. And there are also those completely meaningless dialogues that could be omitted without too much fuss. Ugh.
I’m also dissatisfied with the final solution. There is no mystery, no suspense and just a tiny bit of action. Everything is so predictable and time-consuming.
I will probably read another book in this series, I quite like the members of Forensic Instincts. It will be nice to meet them again, hopefully in some book with faster pace. As for A Face to Die for, I’m giving it very weak three stars, I would give 2.5 if I could. - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Andrea Kane is one of my favourite authors, for when I wish to escape. That said, this one was a disappointment. For one thing, in my opinion, it should have been more streamlined. While lengthy reads can be alright, if there is a lot happening & a lot of character development needed, which is the case in this storyline, the author spent too much time describing how people were dressed, the food they ate, and the appearance of the settings in which the action happened. It made the story drag on too long, and was a distraction.
To be fair, I've never been impressed with people who put too much store in the price of their homes, clothing or other status symbols. Perhaps this aspect of the story is putting me off. I still recommend Andrea Kane as an author. - Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5It has been a while since I have read a book by this author. So, I was very looking forward to reading this book. I had no problems reading it and finishing it in a very quick manner. No, the issue for me was that I did not feel or experience any heightened build up of intensity in the storyline. Plus, it felt a little disjointed. Nothing really came together until the last third of the story. Although, I will give props to Casey and her team at Forensic Instincts. The team is what kept me reading. They worked well and smart together. Casey is a good, strong female lead. Who has earned the respect of her team. When the story did all come together in the end, I had no reactions. Sadly, this book did not win me over. Yet, I do plan to go back and read some of the other books that I missed in this series as I want to see more of Casey and the rest of the team in action.
