About this audiobook

Ever since being stuck with the job of pythia, the chief seer of the supernatural world, Cassie Palmer has been playing catch up. Catch up to the lifetime's worth of training she missed being raised by a psychotic vampire instead of at the fabled pythian court. Catch up to the powerful, and sometimes seductive, forces trying to mold her to their will. It's been a trial by fire that has left her more than a little burned.

But now she realizes that all that was just the warm up for the real race. Ancient forces that once terrorized the world are trying to return, and Cassie is the only one who can stop them . . .

Well, I finally got around to reading this. I had pre-paid for it and thought that I would re-read the series before starting it, however that was an undertaking I did not have time for. So I just re-read the one before. I started out kind of nervous because the last few books have been all about running the protagonists ragged but getting no resolution or character growth, plus cliff-hanger endings. So wasn't looking forward to that.

It was only after reading a recent review here on GR that I decided that maybe I could give it a chance. Previous beta reviews all said that the book was a big mess of action but again, no resolutions. I'm guessing a massive rewrite took place since this book was so pushed back in release dates.

The upside - some arcs are resolved, some answers were given, many backstories were revealed and detailed, there were more than a few sexy-times, and character motivations were revealed..

The downside- Again Cassie is basically thrown into every possible crappy death situation, she is knocked down so hard that I couldn't believe she got up. Also, she is bening given so many arbitrary obstacles that I just about tossed my Kindle across the room. Couldn't she just get a damn break? However, Rossier made for a lot of comic relief. Also note, it was such a convoluted story with so many things going on at once, and for so long that I found myself skimming because there is just so much detailed descriptions of melee fighting that I could endure. Also, you will find that the book is long, and so you think so much is going to get resolved, but it is basically a crap-ton of filler for what shouldn't have taken so long.

You can skim through some things, but there is backstories and snippets that will prove helpful later in the book, so do it with that in mind if you must.

All in all? I liked it, but don't think I could do it again.

Not her best work. I knew where the plot was supposed to be going, but it seemed to circle the actual meat of the book a lot, and where she could have expanded on storyline, there seemed to be a lot of useless exposition. It wasn't bad enough to make me stop reading the series, but here's to hoping she gets some of her mojo back for the next one.

I have been reading this series for years and what keeps me going is how Karen Chance solves the problem. It's so unique, it's things I wouldn't have dreamed of. Maybe that's my lack of creativity, who knows, but its what keeps me coming back for more with this series.

Cassie has gone through a lot in this series and this book really shows her individual growth an individual with multiple talents. She is still getting chased all over but the Pythias that think that she is a rogue, she is still trying to save Pritkin, and she is finally learning key bits of information from Mircea.

I would have rated this book higher but it was slow in the beginning. I jumped from one thing to another and it was very chaotic. I feel like it was very important for Cassie to have all these little battles pile up on top of each other for the story to progress the way it did. But, there was a lot of pages where Cassie was drained or dead tired. So that's what the dull aspect to the book was, but again it was very important to her growth.

I am very conflicted about my feelings when it comes to RIDE THE STORM. Things happened SOOOOOO slowly that it was hard to stay interested in the various events that happened, but after all was said and done I did enjoy the story, just got bored more than I would like to admit. Why does each event of the book have to take five chapters of inconsequential conversation, thoughts, and action scenes? Half of the time things jumped around so much or was dragged out so long that I could have skipped chapters and still knew everything that happened. And really, do things need to blow up or engage in fight scenes so much? There were quite a few times that the chaos got way out of hand and just made zero sense. I have never read a book that was so full of action, but felt so stagnant at the same time. The love triangle that is Cassie, Mircea and Pritkin definitely explodes in RIDE THE STORM. I still can't decide if that is a good or bad thing. One definitely feels like it makes more sense than the other, but the other still feels really important. I just don't know anymore who I'm rooting for.The ending really saved the book for me. Things are about to change and I just don't know where these changes will take Cassie. Hopefully the author can reign in the use of unnecessary things that have plagued the last few books.* This book was provided free of charge from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
