Such an excellent story! Lots of laughter and passion. Plus Lady Danbury is such an amazing character.

This was one of my favorite Quinn novels. I did think the end got drawn out too long and some of the chemistry between the 2 main characters was a little off feeling at times especially during intimate scenes, but enjoyed everything else! The reasons behind the main characters not being together was a bit unique and made for an interesting read.

Enjoyed this read though the last quarter of the book was not as good as the rest I thought. But if you enjoyed Bridgerton, you should enjoy this.

    How to Marry a Marquis
    2 Stars

Drawn out and tedious with the occasional moment of emotional depth and intensity indicative of Quinn's future brilliance.

The underlying premise of a the heroine discovering a manual for finding a husband is ridiculous and the silly misunderstanding that characterizes the last 25% of the book is trite. The heroine's reaction is blown completely out of proportion.

Elizabeth and James have potential as a couple but their bantering falls flat. The only stellar moment in their relationship is when they confide their difficult pasts and reveal a captivating depth of character. Unfortunately this is ruined by the ending.

It is a good thing I read the Bridgertons before Quinn's earlier works because I would never have picked up another if I had read this first.

I loved this book! It has one of my favourite plot lines. Man offers to help a lady find a husband.. but will he be able to let her go once he gets to know her??? .. I almost didn't read this book because the first in this series wasn't what I expect from Quinn and James in that book hadn't really grabbed my attention. I am so glad I did though. James was fantastic as the lead in his story and Elizabeth was a perfect match. This was exactly what I expect from Julia Quinn, funny, great banter and chemistry, great plot.. I would recommend this book even if you haven't read the first of the series.

♥ How to Marry a Marquis:
This is my second favorite book by Julia Quinn.

I've enjoyed the book tremendously, I felt sorry for Elizabeth, I hoped James would make some action soon and not wait tell the end of the book. Okay so I cried a lot after the stable incident, both James's and Elizabeth story is so sad. Then I could not stop laughing, Caroline, Black, Lady Danbury and her cat Malcolm made me chuckle and then laugh out loud!!!

I loved this book!! I just love Julia Quinn!! She is romantic and funny!

This is a wonderful book about a young female that is trying to raise her family after the death of both parents. As always there is a twist to the story. The family does not have any money they are classified as poor gentry. The young female is a companion to a local titles lady who is older and wishes to help the female. The older lady decides that this wonderful companion would be perfect for her nephew that she helped raise. She decides to resort to some planning and scheming on her own and devises a plan to get her nephew to the area and accidentally they are thrown together.
As always every reader knows the out come of reading a historical romance book but that does not stop any of us from reading the book. They always have a happy ending but we as readers still enjoy reading them. Yes this was a wonderful book.
This book had a wonderful interesting plot with fully developed characters. My favorite character was Malcolm. I will not go into detail about who Malcolm is so you will just have to read the book.

This is a wonderful book. Funny, witty, and romantic, this book had me laughing a good deal of the way through it. James, who was first introduced in "To Catch an Heiress," is the hero of this book, and he is well matched with Elizabeth, the companion of James's aunt, Lady Danbury. With Elizabeth thinking that James is someone else, and James suspecting Elizabeth of blackmail, they begin to fall in love nonetheless, Elizabeth tortured by the fact that she can't marry him even if she does love him - he doesn't have enough money to support her family and send her little brother to Eton. This is a fun, light book. Don't look for anything too deep between the pages, but it will certainly keep you entertained on a rainy day - and give you some laughs as well!

The heroine is outspoken, practical, and named Elizabeth. There is comedy, banter, corsetry, and even a not-bad characterization of a kid.

    Really what's not to like?

Maybe I should wait to write the review for this story but I am not that will make it any better in the end. I was glad to see James Sidwell, Marquis of Riverdale, finally get his happily ever after. I enjoyed meeting James in To Catch an Heiress. He was funny, caring and loyal. He is all that and more in this story. It was wonderful to learn more about his childhood and how that made him the person he is in this story. Learning about his father and how his aunt stepped in and saved James from becoming a cruel and violate man was better than I could imagine. The way James interacted with the Hotchkiss children warmed my heart. It shows that he is going to be a wonderful father and husband. James is going to be one of my favorite heroes.Elizabeth Hotchkiss has done everything in her power to keep her brother and sisters fed and clothed. It shows that she is committed to keep the family together even though it is very difficult for a woman to earn a living in this time period. Elizabeth is intelligent, sharp witted, and has a sense of humor that will have to smiling. I enjoyed her interaction with Lady Danbury. The problem with Elizabeth is she is much too quick to jump to conclusions. She is also not that confident about her attractiveness to the opposite sex. I was more than a little upset that she so over reacted to learning who James really was. It was the ideal situation but there was a good reason to for him to keep the secret and it would have been nice if she had given him a fair hearing. It was great to read about Lady Danbury again. She appears in the almost all of the Bridgerton books. I guess that this is probably the first time she showed up but I read the Bridgerton books first so I am a little backwards. I sometimes wish I had a relative that was like Lady Danbury. I would love to watch her handle a crowd. This is a very good story and a great contribution to the genre of historical romance. It is very typical of the time period that it was written in. There are lots of laughs, which I have come to expect from Ms. Quinn, and there are some very sad places. The book is a quick read as well. There is a little violence toward Elizabeth by a third party but it is quickly handled before anything really nasty can happen. If you have enjoy any of the other books that Ms. Quinn has written you are going to love this one.

Quite an entertaining story about a woman who finds a book about marrying a marquis and tries to follow the instructions. When a real marquis finds what she's doing he endeavours to help while trying not to fall for her. Elizabeth has to marry to help her family but can she find love as well a money?I found it terribly entertaining, the characters were great fun and I rooted for them to find love.

Lady Danbury features heavily in this book, which is always a joy. She owns a cat, inappropriately called Malcolm (suspect there's a a story there) who's universally loathed by everyone except Lady Danbury, and Malcolm returns the compliment, providing lots of fun with his well timed hisses and yowls. There are ots of funny moments in the book, especially when Lizzie first encounters James, causing him physical pain. These books aren't intended to be anything more than a fast, funny read, and this one fits the bill perfectly.

Second book in the series Ex Spies, the first was Catch a Heiress. This cute, funny story. It was romantic. It had Lady Danbury, funny quirky banter was great. Lady Danbury's companion, Elizabeth and her nephew would be the perfect couple if only they could get to know each other. The story line included:Lady Danbury, blackmail, hidden identity,a guide book on how to win a Marquis and three delightful children.

Most fans of Julia Quinn's consider her Bridgerton novels to be the gold standard by which all her other works are to be judged. However, I find there is no way to compare this novel to the Bridgerton series. They are vastly different, but similarly delightful. I read TO CATCH AN HEIRESS first, but this one was the better of the two. (By the way, they are companion novels, however it is not necessary to have read one before the other. This works as a stand-alone novel as well.) I love Lady Danbury from the Bridgerton novels and am delighted with her strong influence in this book. She's opinionated, meddling, and rude, but she's lovable all the same. Elizabeth was a likable heroine. She's kind-hearted and generous, but she also has a backbone and is extremely witty. I loved the hero as well, particularly when he was being so protective. He becomes a knight in shining armor, not just for her, but for her siblings as well. The story has many funny moments, and the romance is very sweet. There's only one sex scene (and it's at the end), but James and Elizabeth do have several passionate encounters, and there is no lack of chemistry between them. I rather like that they do not jump into bed together. Considering 19th century standards of behavior, this seems much more likely. They get to know and love one another, and a proposal is made before any such compromise. I loved it, and truly hope Julia Quinn has planned more books like it for the future.

A later book of JQ's and it is a much better read, quite enjoyable. A mark deducted for anachronisms. Attention to period detail is again sloppy with young men outdoors with tennis racquets - a game 57 years in the future. Indoor tennis - royal tennis was of course possible. And a common fault with many Regency writers the idea that whiskey was the drink of choice for the upper classes of England - it was brandy up until the 1880's.

I was looking for something light and fluffy and this hit the spot. 4.5 stars - .5 off because some of the clumsiness of the heroine was just kind of lame. A bit too much at the beginning of the story and I was rolling my eyes a bit. Book hits my faves list anyway.

Elizabeth Hotchkiss is desperate to get her siblings out of poverty, and so decides to take the advice of a book, How to Marry a Marquis, found in her employer’s (the delightfully frank Lady Danbury, seen in many of Quinn’s books) library. The book does, of course, lead Elizabeth to a marquis, James Sidwell, of Riverdale, in disguise as an estate manager. Charming characters, but not nearly as good as the Bridgertons…

After reading a squillion regency romances in a row, this was a little refreshing, the heroine isn't rich or posh, but rather poor and just on the edge of being a servant. And the hero pretends to be.While the plot is standard (rich titled lad pretends to be lowly person, falls in love with girl and she's very cross when he discovers his real identity) the characters behave believably. There is no plastic silly conflict keeping the lovers apart here, but some real issues of pride and woeful timing.
