About this audiobook

It's almost Christmastime in Cape Bay, and another murder has everyone in town talking. A despised new drama teacher at the local high school is killed in the school's parking lot. The police arrest a beloved teacher, Mrs. Crowsdale, but everyone else thinks she is too nice to murder anyone. Mike, however, says they have solid evidence that proves she did it.

Sammy is particularly devastated. Mrs. Crowsdale was her favorite teacher and still her hero. Sammy begs Fran to find the real culprit. Fran isn't so sure. Mike would be angry with her for butting in on another case. And what if more danger befalls her? After all, there are some pretty dangerous people in town . . .

Each year during Advent, I take a break from my usual reading to enjoy books specifically about Christmas. This year I didn't read as many as usual, and the ones I did read were much gentler. This was an intentional decision because, like many other people, I find that virtual meetings--even social activities--take more organizing, more preparation, and are more tiring. Having said all that, I will say the four books I did read, although not the best literature, comprised a tonic for my taxed soul. All four were free "bonus books" from electronic sources.

This is the third of the books I read. This too is a cosy murder. In its shortest form, a much-disliked drama teacher at the high school is murdered. No one shows any sorrow at her demise but when the favourite teacher in the school is arrested for the crime everyone in the town is devastated and angry. The cafe owner, Fran, decides to work on solving the case when her star baker, Sammy, is unable to work because of her distress at the arrest. It is clear neither Sammy nor Fran think the police will get it right. There are mentions of previous cases where the police needed Fran's help to arrest the right person.

It was an okay book. The problem could have been that I hadn't read any of the previous stories in the series and so didn't know the characters well, but I find that usually in a series that really doesn't matter. Having read the reviews of this and her other books I've come to believe this one is not at the author's usual standard.

I felt like she had written a Christmas book because she had to write a Christmas book. Christmas is in the background but the crime and story could have been at any time of year and so the references to Christmas became irrelevant. As I said above I was looking for a Christmas read and had I known this book had so little mention of the holiday season I don't think I would have read it at this time of year.

The murder was too easy to solve and there were very few epiphanies, of any kind. I honestly don't think I could recommend this book to anyone--even the most avid cosy mystery readers.
