About this audiobook

Best-selling author Rick Riordan introduces this adventure by Roshani Chokshi about twelve-year-old Aru Shah, who has a tendency to stretch the truth in order to fit in at school.

While her classmates are jetting off to family vacations in exotic locales, she'll be spending her autumn break at home, in the Museum of Ancient Indian Art and Culture, waiting for her mom to return from her latest archeological trip. Is it any wonder that Aru makes up stories about being royalty, traveling to Paris, and having a chauffeur?

One day, three schoolmates show up at Aru's doorstep to catch her in a lie. They don't believe her claim that the museum's Lamp of Bharata is cursed, and they dare Aru to prove it. Just a quick light, Aru thinks. Then she can get herself out of this mess and never ever fib again.

But lighting the lamp has dire consequences. She unwittingly frees the Sleeper, an ancient demon whose duty it is to awaken the God of Destruction. Her classmates and beloved mother are frozen in time, and it's up to Aru to save them.

The only way to stop the demon is to find the reincarnations of the five legendary Pandava brothers, protagonists of the Hindu epic poem, the Mahabharata, and journey through the Kingdom of Death. But how is one girl in Spider-Man pajamas supposed to do all that?

I really enjoyed this book. The narration was great, and I definitely got Percy Jackson vibes. That isn’t to take away from this story, though, because it definitely was unique in its own way. It is the first novel I have read featuring Hindu mythology, so it taught me a few things. I highly suggest!

Once I recognized that it was more middle reader than YA, the story was fun, and I enjoyed the plays on words, the gender playfulness, and the Doctor Who reference. The narration, however, just didn’t work for me. Nearly every sentence ended with a tone of incredulity or horror, even when the statement was a simple observation. It was thoroughly distracting and has turned me off of this narrator entirely, which is too bad as she has a lovely voice.

I enjoyed the idea of this book. This book wasn't for me. If I was younger I'm sure I would of enjoyed it more.

This was very interesting and different than other mythology stories simply because I haven't read or known much about Hindu mythology. I love hearing and reading about different mythologies though. It's intriguing to hear about what different cultures and people think about with their mythology stories and such.

It was a really fun book to read as well. I enjoyed it a lot and am looking forward to the next book and seeing what happens with Aru’s adventures!
