About this audiobook
My name is Brett. I'm a college-educated man who was once a husband of twenty-six years with two children, three businesses, and a large home with an actual white picket fence. I'm also a drug addict. And I have a tale to tell.
My story has everything: sex, death, pain, atheism, God, jail, marriage, divorce, heresy, homosexuality, physics, traffic fatalities, computer science, video games, cinnamon toothpicks, Barry Manilow, Nine Inch Nails, pornography, breasts, used tampons, strippers, venereal disease, abortion, prostitutes, AIDS, racism, suicide, infidelity, public nudity, anti-Semitism, marijuana, alcohol, pawn shops, drug dealers, needles, acid, ecstasy, crack, heroin, pain pills, withdrawal, interventions, rehabs, product tampering, road rage, vandalism, elderly abuse, grave desecration, arson, identity theft, burglary, armed robbery, and murder.
But more importantly, it's about the despair of addiction and the absolute certainty that it can be overcome. Recovery is not simply abstinence, but a process of growing up. I spent my entire life
searching for the key to long-term sobriety.
I would like to share with you what I have learned.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Very relatable content! Very intriguing and kept my attention the whole time, maybe because his experiences are so close to my own. His insightfulness on sobriety has helped me with my own struggles.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I just don't understand why our brains are wired liked this. It this nature vs. nurture? And if it is, what is the reason? Some people are not to be able to resist while some can resist addiction? How is this defense mechanism working, yey and ney? Or, is evolution part of this if you want to go that side of conversation? There is something we do not know about ourselves yet.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5It was interesting at the beginning and then got more harrowing as it progressed. Very poignant and honest. Portrays the addiction without glamorizing it. Leads you into areas that are heartbreaking, surprising & with cautionary hope.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Candid, raw and paints a vivid picture. I loved this book and I would love to meet Brett and shake his hand some day. Definitely set off some triggers for me. If you are less the 90 days sober I’d wait to read this book. But it’s drug addiction in its finest form.
To Brett- my favorite quote “Why give up everything for one thing, when you could give up one thing to have everything”1 person found this helpful

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The most enjoyable book I've read/listened to in a long time.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Almost stopped listening at the beginning because the content was so lewd and nothing but disturbing sex stories but gradually it got better though still mostly about sex. Of course this is addiction from a man's perspective so that is to be expected. Brett is honest in his telling and that is the most drawing part of his story. His affluent upbringing might not be too relatable but his story of hitting rock bottom will resonate with many.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5In my four and a half years of recovery, I have read countless stories about addiction. This one has got to be my favorite! Humble is the man who tells his truth even if it doesn’t paint him in the brightest of lights! I am going to write my own book one of these days, if I can do half as well as Brett did in this novel, I will consider it a win!! Thank you Brett!!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5It was fascinating to hear an apparent real life no bull story about addiction. It will help me relate better to those in our community who suffer from it. Perhaps a little too much glorification for me but helpful nonetheless.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5The book itself is awesome!!!. I‘m not sure why is the recording so shitty tho.. at the end of MANY chapters there‘s a cut and Jumps to the next one(in the middle of a word or so..) . I have a feeling I‘m missing the half of the book. It‘s really annoying
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5loved it. such an honest depiction of thoughts, actions and life as a substance dependent person. worth a listen!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Holy. Shit. This book absolutely blew me away. At times disturbing, enlightening, tragic, beloved and intense. I recommend this for ANYONE and EVERYONE to catch a glimpse of the human condition under the influence of drugs. Outstanding Prose.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The books content was amazing and how it broke down recovery and lack there of throughout. I really enjoyed the way it was narrated, helped to give a full story telling aspect. Being in recovery and having a background riddled with addiction, I found a ton of commonality. It takes the reader/listener on a very real first person account of how the disease of addiction can take hold of a persons life and it is not a choice any sane person could or would make.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great Book, very inspiring, funny and dreadful at the same time
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This was an extremely powerful book!!! You must read it!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5That was the best book I’ve listened to in a while.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is an awesome book. The author does a great job making you think about life, philosophy, and even religion-all while telling his interesting life and battle with drugs.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Raw honest account of an addict's journey through the horror of the disease and humility of recovery.
