This was an exciting romantic suspense novel with possibly the most awkward main characters possible. K9 Officer Otto Gunnersen is great with orphaned animals but tongue-tied when around women. Sarah is a woman on the run from an abusive brother who wants to use her as a pawn and his entry into a rival crime family. They meet in Monroe, Colorado, where Sarah is living with two other runaways. This is the third in the Rocky Mountain K9 Unit series. We get a chance to catch up with Theo and Jules and with Hugh and Grace. The men are all members of the Monroe police department. The women have all been sent there by the mysterious Mr. Espina. It doesn't take long for Sarah's brother Aaron to catch up with her. He and her potential fiance Logan Jovanovic almost succeed in capturing her. However, Otto intervenes which leaves Aaron in jail waiting for the FBI to pick him up and Logan on the run. But the danger isn't over. Monroe is an isolated mountain town where three-quarters of the people leave for the winter. Now a blizzard is coming and Aaron has called in mercenaries in helicopters to find and capture or kill his sister. They begin by bombing the only two passes the allow access to the town and killing all the ways to communicate. They also bomb a number of the buildings including the law enforcement building and Otto's house. The struggles Sarah goes through to rescue Otto's animals and find her way to the town were harrowing. Meanwhile, Otto is trying to connect with his fellow officers and make sure the remaining townspeople are safe. The story is an emotional roller coaster which goes from the awkward romance to heart-pounding terror during Sarah's flight to town. This was an excellent story which stands alone well but would be enriched by reading the first two books in the series.

To say that Survive the Night is my favorite book in the Rocky Mountain K9 Unit series would be an absolutely true statement! I did not think that I was going to love Otto Gunnersen’s character as much as I did because I usually prefer more alpha male type characters but I loved Otto! He was so sweet and bumbling but at the same time fiercely protective, a girl could just eat him up.“Turning instinctively to follow, Otto realized that he hadn’t said a word to Sarah. He twisted around, but he couldn’t think of anything to say, so he just raised a hand in an awkward, clumsy wave that embarrassed him even as he was doing it. Sarah blinked and then slowly, cautiously, lifted a hand in response.”Too cute! Alice aka Sarah Clifton had been a virtual prisoner in her family home, first by her father and then by her brother once her father had passed on. She was both innocent and hardened. She never had things like freedom, friends, or relationships but she also knew first hand that people could be cruel and dishonest. When she landed in Monroe, Colorado she never expected that she would be able to have it all. All she wanted was to stay ahead of her brother because she knew that he would be coming for her because he did not take losing very well.“He finally looked away from Sarah to focus on Jules. “Puppies. Curtis Trammel’s shepherd was hit by a car.” “He brought them to you?” Before he answered, Grace spoke again. “Of course he did. You’re the Dr. Doolittle around here, after all.” Otto gave an uncomfortable half shrug, but Sarah had stopped pretending not to stare at him. He was a Viking lumberjack cop who bottle-fed orphaned puppies? If he’d spent years trying to think of the most effective punch to the ovaries, he couldn’t have come up with a better plan.” Both Sarah and Otto are smitten with each other but they are so cute and awkward around each other that you just can’t help loving them together. Unfortunately, trouble just seems to follow Sarah and no matter how hard they try to prevent it, trouble just seems to keep coming for her. This made Sarah certain that she was only bringing trouble to the doorstep of her friends in Monroe. She was ready to leave that town if only to keep her friends and Otto safe, plus she never really planned on staying there. Monroe was just a safe place to get her legs underneath her is all. Despite her conviction there was something about Otto that kept her solidly planted where she was. Together her and Otto would have to define what was blooming between them and work together to bring an end to the reign of terror that was besieging Sarah. What a sweet, humorous, sexy and did I say HILARIOUS story Survive the Night was. I love that all the characters from the series were involved in this story and I loved the addition of the furry characters as well. I felt that the pacing was fantastic and I have to say that the opening scenes had my heart beating quite rapidly as I was afraid for Sarah. Also, I just love Mateo Espina and the role he plays in this series, everyone needs a guy like that to swoop in when they need someone. Survive the Night is a book that I just can’t recommend enough! I am also thrilled that it is not to be the last book in this series, there is a book four titled Through the Fire and you can bet that I will be looking forward to that book! This review is based on a complimentary book I received from NetGalley. It is an honest and voluntary review. The complimentary receipt of it in no way affected my review or rating.

3rd book in the Rocky Mountain K9 Unit series.

Light romance with lots of danger, crime and things blowing up. Similar to books 1 and 2, Sarah is on the run from a crime family - the same family featured in the earlier two books. And she encounters a K9 police officer hottie!

Sparks fly - both romance and actual sparks as the crime family comes after Sarah.

I really didn't expect to like this series so much, but I can't seem to put these down. Just the right books for my mood at the moment I guess.

Survive the Night by Katie RuggleRocky Mountain K-9 Unit #3Captive of her family since childhood Alice Blanchett can hardly believe there is someone willing to help her escape her prison. When it finally happens there is a mad dash to freedom that sees her settled into Monroe, Colorado with two other women Mr. Espina has rescued in the past. Living with Jules and her siblings is a breath of fresh air and having friends in Jules and Grace a delight and blessing. The women have beaus and those beaus have a friend named Otto and of course Otto and Alice – renamed Sarah – will be attracted to one another. And, the beaus are police officers with K-9 partners – that only adds to the story. The first time Otto sees Sarah he is speechless and so is she. Feeling awkward but interested they hope that their next encounter will go better. Well, their next meeting is over dueling elk and a wee bit easier. The third…awkward again…but…the attraction persists and when Sarah is found by her despicable brother and the man he wants her to marry things begin to heat up in more ways than one. This is an action-packed suspense-filled romance with main characters that charmed me. Huge Otto and tiny Sarah are perfect for one another and oh so sweet together. Otto’s rescued animals are a delight and the finale stupendous…if perhaps a bit unbelievable. Two deserving but shy people find love unexpectedly and grab it with both hands in a book I could not put down. There is a lead into book four that makes me think the evil stepmother from Jules and her siblings lives may make another appearance – hope she gets her comeuppance. I did not read book two, somehow missed it, and didn’t need it to thoroughly enjoy this story. Thank you to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Casablanca for the ARC – This is my honest review. 5 Stars

I thought that this book was very well done. This is the third book in the Rocky Mountain K9 Unit series and I do believe that it would work best for reader that have read the preceding novels since events from earlier books do come into play in this one. This book had a lot of action and I found that I didn't want to stop reading once I started. This book was just a lot of fun to read. This book features Otto and Sarah. Sarah has lived a life controlled by others. She is given no choices and is physically abused often. When she gets a chance to start a new life, she jumps at the chance and ends up rooming with Jules and Grace from previous books. Otto is an officer with the local police force. He is quiet and extremely kind. He has a soft spot for animals and is known to take in those needing a home.I liked Otto and Sarah together and thought that they had a lot in common. They are instantly attracted to each other but they don't seem quite sure how to deal with it at the start. Otto seems to be what Sarah needs and is there when needed. He has a quiet calmness that Sarah seems to need. When Sarah needs to be rescued, Otto is there to help. They really seemed to compliment each other very well. The books in this series have all had a lot of action but I think that this one takes things to a whole new level. There are several very exciting scenes that really had me nervous for the characters. I liked that the characters from the prior books all play key roles in this book and get in on the action as well. The animals in this book were great. Any book that can work a few animals into the story get a few bonus points from me and this one had quite the menagerie playing the part.I only had a couple of very minor complaints. I thought that Sarah recovered from the years of abuse a lot quicker than I would have thought possible. I also would have liked to see a bit more regarding Otto's history. There is a quick mention of his past that really made me want more. I would have liked to see them both work through their issues from the past together.I would recommend this book to others. This was a really exciting book that was a whole lot of fun to read. I can't wait to read more of this wonderful series!I received an advance reader edition of this book from Sourcebooks Casablanca via Edelweiss.

OMG, Otto. I'm not sure I have words enough to explain the awesomeness that is Otto. I mean, the guy took out a wall to make a double-wide stall to accommodate the rescue horse and rescue goat who wanted to be roomies--how can you not love this guy?Survive the Night is the third book in the Rocky Mountain K9 Unit, and though it could be read as a standalone--a new couple, Otto and Alice/Sarah are featured, and Sarah is introduced here--there are some overarching plot threads that tie all the stories together and that look to be coming to a head in a future book if the epilogue is to be believed. No worries, though, you could start here and still have books 1 and 2 read before that happens ;)This is one book that absolutely lives up to its title--the last third or so of the book takes place during one adrenaline-filled, pulse-pounding, edge-of-your-seat night; don't get that far unless you're prepared to do nothing but read until you're finished, because you won't be able to put it down! Sarah and Otto make a great team and a fantastic couple, and with the help of the rest of the series regulars kick some series bad guy butt--So. Much. Fun!Rating: 4 1/2 stars / A-I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
