About this audiobook

Delaney Nichols, originally of Kansas but settling happily into her new life as a bookseller in Edinburgh, works at The Cracked Spine in the heart of town. She's recently befriended a few medical school students after they came into the shop to sell some antique medical tomes. But when one of the students' friends is found murdered outside in the alley, Delaney takes it upon herself to help bring the murderer to justice.

During her investigation, Delaney finds some old scalpels in the bookshop's warehouse-she finds out that they belonged to a long-dead doctor, whose story might be connected to the present-day murder. It's all Delaney can do to race to solve this crime before time runs out and she ends up in danger herself.

Delaney is from Kansas, but now lives in Edinburgh and works at a local bookstore, curating the owner’s hidden and unusual collection. She’s settled in by this third book in the series and has made friends with a few medical students. When one girl is found murdered right outside the bookstore, Delaney becomes involved. What does the girl’s death have to do with the history of Burke and Hare, murderers from the past who killed to provide corpses for the medical college? Always a delightful 0series, this is an enjoyable visit to Edinburgh with a true cozy feel.

Yet another lovely story for the Scottish Bookshop Mystery series. Delaney ever the little sleuth and her rag tag bunch of found family warm my heart.

This book brings together new friends, new mysteries. A girl needs friends close to hear age when all those around her seen so much older. Delaney always seems to find herself in the middle of challenges that get solved with a great amount of hunting and research.

I absolutely loved the ending and cannot wait for the next book!

Book 3 of the series, A Scottish Book Mystery, has Delaney Nichols searching for the killer of a medical student.Delaney Nichols works at The Cracked Spine, a book store that has rare books. Some medical students brought some antique medical books to sell. Another mystery to solve for Delaney after a medical student is murdered. The Cracked Spine is a book shop in Edinburgh where Delaney works with Edwin, the owner and Rosie and Hamlet. Rosie has a Scottish terrier, Hector, who loves to be scratched behind his ears.I am enjoying these books based in Scotland. Paige Shelton has written some books that give a lot of history, mystery and a love interest as well as special friends.I gave this book a 4 star rating I found these audio books on You Tube for no cost. The series can be read as a stand alone, but I suggest they be read in order. I plan to order some hard copies of the books.

Eh. Not great, but not bad. The MC, Delaney was pushy - I'd have gotten really shirty with her had I been one of the other characters. Very woman-with-a-mission; even though it wasn't of the 'I can do the police's job better' variety, it was still overbearing and unrealistic. I did like the Burke and Hare theme though, and I thought they mystery itself was well plotted and a little diabolical, even if part of it didn't work. The murder suspect is accused of killing three patients on the table - the first one is called a botched appendectomy. So if he isn't the murderer, how did the real murderer kill three of his patents in surgery while making it look like his fault? If they happened post op, it was never specified.(hide spoiler) I usually like these for the ambiance (Edinburgh), this history sprinkled throughout and the setting of a bookshop with an attached room of treasures, collected over time by the owner. I'll keep reading them, unless Delaney continues to be pushy and overbearing.

Though Kansas born, Delaney now works in a bookshop in Scotland, researching books and other items. She has made new friends, including a barkeep - her steady beau - and a pair of medical students. When another student is killed near the shop, Delaney take a personal interest in finding the murderer. There are more secrets than even she dreamed of, and discovering them takes her closer to her own peril. This tale has an intriguing plot, interesting characters, and a bit of romance - all the things that make up a good cozy and an engaging story.

This is the first book in the series of three that I have read, but I was able to follow the story line with no problem. It does mention some past events, but the story can be read as a stand alone without reading the prior two books. After reading this one, I will go back and read the first two. I absolutely loved the history and setting in the book. After visiting Scotland last fall, I was able to revisit the sites I had seen and learn more about the story of Burke and Hare that I had heard about in the dungeons and underground. Now, on to the story.

Delaney Nicols works at The Cracked Spine, a bookstore in Edinburgh. She befriends two medical students, Rena and Sopie, and buys a couple of books from them. Little do they know that they are rare and valuable manuscripts. Later that night while socializing at the local pub, she meets another friend Mallory and one of their professors, Dr. Eban. She thinks there is something off about Dr. Eban and there is something that bothers her. After leaving, Delaney meets her boyfriend Tom at the bookstore to show a famous set of scalpels used by an infamous local doctor back in the days of body snatching. After viewing them, locking them in the desk and locking the store, they head home. The next morning when Delaney arrives at work, she finds out that the store was broken into and Mallory is dead in the alley with a skull placed beside the body. A mystery to be solve for sure.

I enjoyed this book very much. The setting of a rare bookshop in old Edinburgh, a hidden warehouse where the owner hides/stores rare antiquities and the whole medical school link made the story feel a bit spooky without being too creepy. Delaney is an intelligent main character, who makes friends easily and is nice and friendly. She is also perseverant and does not give up easily. Along with Delaney there are all the quirky secondary characters, most of them working at the university and the bookstore. Tom, Delaney's boyfriend is her sounding board and helps her solve the mystery, even with all the red herrings. I was completely surprised by the ending and the big reveal, but it was realistic and in hindsight, the clues were there. A lot of history is told throughout the story that made it even more interesting for me. The publisher, St. Martin's Press, generously provided me with a copy of this book to read. The opinions stated are my own.

Lost Books and Old Bones by Paige Shelton is the third tale in A Scottish Bookshop Mystery series. Delaney Nichols has relocated to Edinburgh, Scotland where she works at The Cracked Spine, a rare book and manuscript shop. Delaney has two new friends in medical students Rena and Sophie. They met when the ladies brought in some antique medical books to sell (which her boss, Edwin MacAlister loves). She went out to a club with them where they encounter Mallory and Dr. Byron Eban (an odd man). Dr. Eban has a particular fascination in Burke and Hare (two men who killed to obtain corpses for Dr. Knox to use for medical research). Dr. Eban believes Edwin owns the scalpels by the famous Dr. Knox (hidden in his not so secret room). Delaney cannot resist checking for the blades before heading home. The next morning, Delaney gets a call that someone broke into The Cracked Spine and Mallory was found dead in the alley beside the shop with a skull from the medical school next to her. Delaney, with the aid of the books, delves into the case to catch the culprit. Lost Books and Old Bones can be read alone. The details a reader’s needs are included in this tale. Delaney does talk about past cases in the story as well. I love the setting of this series. The author provides us with beautiful descriptions of Edinburgh as well as historical tidbits. Another delightful part of the book is the books referenced (who doesn’t love visiting a bookstore and browsing for hours). The paranormal element (the books in The Cracked Spine give her cryptic clues) is barely present. I wish the author would incorporate it more into the story. Burke and Hare are an integral part of the story (mystery). Ms. Shelton wove their history into the story. Their tale is creepy and fascinating. Delaney devoted her time to solving the mystery. She goes around asking questions and people just answer them (I know it is fiction but is this realistic). You would think someone would tell her to bugger off. Delaney spends little time at the job that pays her bills, but she does have time for her boyfriend, Tom (and to be jealous of old girlfriend who appeared at the crime scene and happens to be a reporter). The author does not fully flesh out the secondary characters (Rena & Sophie for example). I found the pace to be slow especially in the beginning which was also disjointed. It lacked an ease and flow. There was too much repetition of certain details (how Delaney is not good friends with Sophie and Rena). The mystery had some interesting components (Dr. Eban is particularly unnerving) and there is misdirection to throw readers off the real killer. However, it really did not work as I had no trouble identifying the culprit (the who and why). The story could have used more action (needed something to liven it up). I am rating Lost Books and Old Bones 3 out of 5 stars. Lost Books and Old Bones just failed to capture and hold my attention.

Delaney is settling in to her new life in Scotland and after an evening out with some girl friends, she is startled to learn that one of the girls has been found murdered outside of the bookshop where she works. Her friends are all medical students and Delaney gets to wondering if a special set of books that her boss has acquired may be behind the murder. Since it's her job to verify the value of the books, she is drawn into the investigation of the murder. The background of the history of Burke and Hare, murderers from the past who killed to provide corpses for the medical college and its incorporation into the story was magnificent. Again I was drawn to the regular characters and their closeness to each other and their desire to protect each other.

Another fun entry in this series! Delaney is doing her best to fit in and make new friends in Scotland. Yet again there is a murder and she is forced to investigate it. I love The Cracked Spine book store she works at along with the rag tag crew employed there. Her landlord is a hoot too! See how much I liked it I just typed hoot! If you are a fan of cozy mysteries or know anyone who is I definitely recommend this series. You are guaranteed an enjoyable time and will walk away with a smile on your face and hearing everything in a Scottish brogue. What more could you want?
