About this audiobook

Paul Tremblay’s terrifying twist to the home invasion novel—inspiration for the upcoming major motion picture from Universal Pictures

“Tremblay’s personal best. It’s that good.” — Stephen King

Seven-year-old Wen and her parents, Eric and Andrew, are vacationing at a remote cabin on a quiet New Hampshire lake. Their closest neighbors are more than two miles in either direction along a rutted dirt road.

One afternoon, as Wen catches grasshoppers in the front yard, a stranger unexpectedly appears in the driveway. Leonard is the largest man Wen has ever seen, but he is young, friendly, and he wins her over almost instantly. Leonard and Wen talk and play until Leonard abruptly apologizes and tells Wen, “None of what’s going to happen is your fault.” Three more strangers then arrive at the cabin carrying unidentifiable, menacing objects. As Wen sprints inside to warn her parents, Leonard calls out: “Your dads won’t want to let us in, Wen. But they have to. We need your help to save the world.”

Thus begins an unbearably tense, gripping tale of paranoia, sacrifice, apocalypse, and survival that escalates to a shattering conclusion, one in which the fate of a loving family and quite possibly all of humanity are entwined. The Cabin at the End of the World is a masterpiece of terror and suspense from the fantastically fertile imagination of Paul Tremblay.

This is just like every other Tremblay book - great in the beginning, awesome in the middle, then poof!- it’s like he lost interest in the book and ended with something blah and boring. It’s taken me three books but the third time is a charm and I learned my lesson. I’m staying away - fat fat away!

I really liked this book. It is anything but predictable and rarely goes where you expect it to. The nearly constant fear that doom is seconds away from striking Wen and her dads makes it very hard to put down. Especially when you're putting it down to complete one of the many necessary but uninteresting tasks we all have permanently marked on our daily agendas. Telling myself I was just going to read one more page, or get to a good place to stop for a while, often turned into an extra hour.

It was a very slow book. I thought there would be a lot more to it. I was disappointed when the ending came.

This was the second book I've tried to read this week that was just garbage. Have I been cursed in some way?

Not scary or interesting at all.Voice acting was not very good - her male voices sound so stupid and duncey I'm amazed I listened to as much as I did. Finished half the audiobook and couldn't take it anymore.

This book is so engrossing however I absolutely could not listen to this audiobook. I ended up getting the physical copy because I was really interested in the story. The narrator is HORRIBLE! I feel like I am being read to by a robot. This is really disappointing as I enjoy having the audiobook playing while I’m driving.

I wanted to read this book because I saw so many people had liked it but I will have to say that I didn't really like it at all. I have read some scary books and this one was not that scary to me. There are crazy people holding the occupants of the cabin as hostages but I thought it lacked real tension. I listened to the audio and it was during the day and maybe if I was home alone and it was at night then I'm sure I would have been a bit more nervous. So, if you read this one and you were scared then I would say, "Good for you!" If you haven't read it then maybe you should try it and see if it is scary enough for you. I just thought the whole story was rather strange. But I guess that's why they have so many flavors of ice cream!

Saw the movie first which piqued my interest and was surprised how they differed with some events but enjoyed it.

While there are a lot of themes at play here, their depth is questionable. As an exercise in a popular horror/thriller novel, this is very gripping. There's a definite emotional rollercoaster ride to this book that does lose some momentum halfway through due to the death of a certain character. An engaging story that doesn't wallow entirely in tropes. Recommended for those who aren't squeamish.

Horrible audiobook… couldn’t take it with her robot voice. ?

If I had known that the entire book consists of the characters arguing the same points, in the same room, from start to finish, I wouldn't have read it. Leonard & friends show up & expect the dads to make a huge, life-altering choice but never even explain the details of why they should be believed. I hoped for a thrilling, heart-pounding doomsday story but this isn't it. I kept hoping for more to happen but it never did. The ending literally made me yell, "WHAT?" as I'm left with no actual conclusion to the story. Side note: the narrator's "male" voice was comically sluggish, like a stoned surfer.

Highly over rated. I’m not a drama fan. I went into this book thinking it was a horror or thriller book. It is NOT. That said I liked it for what it was. If you like fast paced and action packed this isn’t it. It was a slog in that department. If I would’ve went into this with different expectations I may have a different opinion but I wasn’t in the mood for the slog of it and the sheer soap opera wordy and rhetorical drama. The ending was thought provoking and was the best part.

Interesting story. Awful ending. One of the worst narrations I’ve heard.

I didn’t care for this at all. It had an interesting premise, but the pacing of the story was very strange, and in some parts it was unclear who was actually narrating what.

This was just not my type of book. It felt too long and too short all at the same time. The book never really explains what is going on and uses pretty generic apocalypse themes.

Very well written and with great pace! The book has you asking yourself what is really going on from page 1 to the ending. Definitely recommended IF you are ok with open endings.

    Don't get the hype.
I found this story predictable and not well written and the audio version an unpleasant listen.

One star is for the audio version. Not the actual story itself. I tried to listen to the audiobook. It was horrible. Three minutes into Chapter 2, I stopped. The narrator’s voice is absolutely dull and dreadful. I thought it would change after the introduction but sadly it didn’t.
Oh well, I’ll have to make time to actually read this one.

The novel itself was ok, besides the annoying repetition at parts. The narrator absolutely butchered it though…especially the dialogue.

I liked this book and the fact that it has a different ending than the movie is great. The narrator did a great job as well.

trembley always has such a good way of making you see both sides of the story, I always feel torn between the supernatural is actually happening or if it’s all in the characters heads. Another amazing story

Choices were made with the narrator, if you change the speed to 1.2 it’s much more bearable. This is a rare moment where I’ll say I liked the movie better.

This book haunted me for days after finishing. It's been over a month now, and it still pops into my head from time to time.
The author is excellent at sowing doubt in the reader's mind, and I found myself flipping from one side to the other throughout the story.
Some of the descriptions are graphic, but they are powerful and don't feel unnecessary.
I appreciate the thought and allegory that went into this book. I appreciate the constant guessing while keeping the plot very simple and straightforward.

I’m… a little conflicted here. On one hand, the narrative is compelling and entangling. I felt like the pacing could’ve been a bit better. It wasn’t too long, per se, but rather, I felt like more could’ve been explored in the story.

Wen’s death hurt me more than the death of a character in a long time. I actually felt myself grieving for someone that wasn’t real. I felt like her character was developed a lot more throughout the story than her dads’. While I could sympathize with Eric and Andrew, there was something deeply person about Wen that I wish I could’ve felt with each of the characters in this story.

Overall, I love the plot, and I feel like it was executed pretty well. My only complaint is that the psychological aspect could’ve been fleshed out a bit more.

I would definitely recommend this book to a friend, however!
