About this audiobook

Only Detective Michael Bennett stands in the way of two lethal cartels fighting for New York City's multi-million-dollar opioid trade. And they know where Bennett, and his family, live.

An anonymous tip about a crime in Upper Manhattan proves to be a setup. An officer is taken down—and, despite the attackers' efforts, it's not Michael Bennett.

New York's top cop is not the only one at risk. One of Bennett's children sustains a mysterious injury. And a series of murders follows, each with a distinct signature, alerting Bennett to the presence of a professional killer with a flair for disguise.

Bennett taps his best investigators and sources, and they fan out across the five boroughs. But the leads they're chasing turn out to be phantoms. The assassin takes advantage of the chaos, enticing an officer into compromising Bennett, then luring another member of Bennett's family into even graver danger.

Michael Bennett can't tell what's driving the assassin. But he can tell it's personal, and that it's part of something huge. Through twist after twist, he fights to understand exactly how he fits into the killer's plan, before he becomes the ultimate victim.

An anonymous tip proves to be a set-up, resulting in tragedy. But the resulting investigation finds only phantoms; the killer is a professional assassin . . . and Michael Bennett is the target. The author’s trademark short chapters keep the tension building as the action rushes along at breakneck speed. All the expected characters are in place; the plot twists and turns as the harrowing cat-and-mouse game keeps the reader intrigued and the pages turning. It’s a quick read, but an enjoyable addition to the Michael Bennett canon. A BookShots tale, “Manhunt” follows the “Ambush” story in this book. Recommended.

I guess I'm just growing tired of Patterson in general.
It was ok. I felt cheated... I thought I had a good 1/4 of the book to go... AND IT ENDED! Then there was a "Bonus Read" of some short story. GAH.

Michael Bennett is on the hunt for a hired hit woman responsible for several homicide's in New York. Then it gets personal. Can he catch the person responsible before someone else is killed? Another page turner from Patterson.

This is the third Michael Bennett book I've read and, I must say, I enjoyed "Ambush" much more than the other two, especially "Bullseye". I found this novel to be a far more cohesive story with one plot and two perspectives, Michael's and Alex's, the woman who was trying to assassinate him.I liked the two sides Bennett portrayed - the tough, no-nonsense detective and then the warm-hearted, loving family man who adores his ten adopted children, his fiancee and his grandfather.Typical of most Patterson books, "Ambush" was fast-paced, full of action and implausible, but a fun read.

The story itself is very good, probably one of the best in the series along with Worst Case, Tick Tock & Alert yet I can't help feel decidedly misled by the claim this book is 432 pages, only for it to finish 2/3 of the way through and have the bookshot novella Manhunt tagged on the back. This is even more infuriating when Manhunt takes place chronologically before Ambush so chances are if you're a Bennett fan you've already read it. Congratulations, you just bought the same book twice without even knowing it!So yeah, that was annoying, I was really getting into the story and wondering where things where going to head in the last hundred pages seeing as it looked like the main thrust of the plot had been wrapped up then bam, there isn't actually a last hundred pages they just tagged a novella on the back end to fatten it up.In conclusion, the story itself is good, but take note it's only really 300 pages, and that's 300 Patterson pages sliced up into 100+ chapters making it more like 200-250 pages of a standard writer which makes this a rather quick read.

Alexandra Martinez, the Beautiful Death, is a paid assassin. She has been hired by a drug cartel to kill Michael Bennett, as retribution because his son, Brian was involved with a drug syndicate, and Bennett had killed one of its people.
Michael needs to track a trail of murders before he can figure out that it is Alex who is chasing him. His family is put in danger, and it comes to a frightening conclusion.
This is the latest installment in the Michael Bennett series, and it is satisfying. The book moves very quickly, with just enough excitement and intrigue to keep it interesting. Another solid Bennett novel.
