I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book as I am a huge Chris Carter fan. My favourite book of his is An Evil Mind which is a pre-runner of Hunting Evil. So naturally I was quite excited when it eventually became available on Scribd.

It didn't disappoint. It was simply excellent. Chris Carter's writing has continuously improved as the series progressed and I think the pacing and intrigue was perfect.

So, why do I give this book only 4 stars? In my opinion it deserves 4.5 stars, but there was one irritating aspect that kept popping up. I don't want to give spoilers away, so I won't go into the details here. However, for the protagonist, Robert Hunter, to be presented as an absolute genius, he acts at times incredibly stupid, even intellectually challenged. On a few occasions, characters in the book have to repeatedly ask him the same question without him responding. This repeated questioning makes for poor and frustrating reading. I know authors recently have this tendency to drag out a scene as to create suspense, but there is no need for Chris Carter to do so. His writing is good enough. Sure, create suspense, by having a character repeat the question, but in one of the opening scenes, poor old Carlos Garcia had to ask the same question 6 times and still didn't get a clear answer. It left my highly irritated, definitely not spellbound with suspense. This happened at least twice more in the book and left me incredibly irritated.

I know I am venting, but such was my frustration and irritation that it left me dissatisfied. Setting that aside, the book was genuinely fantastic and I eagerly await the next installment in the series.

As always I loved Thomas Judd as the narrator. Chris Carter's writing is superb. The way he executes each plan & how he creates the psychopatic mind is so chilling & clearly shows that he has experienced this type of criminology. All is meticulously planned, starting with a brilliant riddle.....and 2 murders which depict an unspeakable act of psychological cruelty to perfectly describe the killer as true evil.....

In Chris Carter’s tenth instalment of his series featuring Robert Hunter, the head of LAPD’s Ultra Violent Crimes Unit, is once again pitted against his psychopathic nemesis, Lucien Folter. In An Evil Mind (Robert Hunter #6) Robert Hunter found himself in a battle of wits with his former college roommate, and the nation’s most prolific serial killer. Now, in Hunting Evil, after having spent three and a half years locked in solitary confinement, Lucien has escaped, and the only thing on his mind is vengeance.Hunting Evil is action packed as Lucien initiates the most sadistic of games with Hunter in a bid to destroy him. With an intelligence that rivals Hunters’s, an ability to disguise every facet of himself, and having had years to plan, Lucien seemingly has the upper hand.Sharp short chapters contribute to the quick pacing as Carter switches between the perspectives of Robert and Lucien. Hunter is struggling with this cat and mouse game, and Carter shows his increasing feelings of frustration and guilt. Lucien’s mind is an uncomfortable place to be in, a psychopath whose goal is to commit and document every variation of murder his inhumanity is chillingly portrayed by Carter.Hunting Evil is a gripping psychological thriller, and though I thought there were some small flaws in the story, (for example, Hunter failing to provide protection to his love interest despite her obviously being at risk), I enjoyed it, much as I have others in the Robert Hunter series.
