About this audiobook

A new life in New Orleans is all Jason Thorpe had hoped: His quaint little store attracts a devoted staff, and his warm, loving heart grants him a loyal circle of friends. He's perfectly content, having left behind the chill of a confusing and danger-filled night in Washington, until he discovers something unbelievable lurking in the steamy darkness of the shadowy streets of the Vieux Carré, something that turns out to be terrifying...and utterly mesmerizing.

The prince of the vampires, Varic Maedoc, is visiting New Orleans when he finds out the man who once helped his counselor is there in the Quarter. He thinks to simply meet and thank Jason — until he lays eyes on him. Varic’s devoted himself to protect the honor of his race, and he's never wanted a mate before...but he immediately knows he must have this man, and no one else will do.

Varic may want to bring Jason safely into his world, but someone who doesn’t like the human's soothing influence on vampires has deadly plans that would disrupt Varic's dreams. Now, unable to tell friend from foe, Jason finds himself wondering how to hold on to the prince’s heart when he’s fighting for his life.

I wanted to like this book so much but I couldn't get through it. Maybe it redeems itself in the last 3 hours but this is my take. Jason's character became more and more bland the longer I progressed and it fell into the age old trap of dominant, power top and subby malleable bottom (And this had nothing to do with their sexual interactions, I didn't get that far.) Jason's wishes to be left alone are never heard, the vamprys ignore his discomfort and insist on "their way" being the only way. It was all a little convoluted and a little too non-con for my taste. I'm sure there's a market for this kind of narrative but if you're looking for a story featuring a healthy relationship dynamic, this isn't it.

Disappointing. It started out great and really interesting. But then the romance happened and it was near Twilight-level stupid. I would have preferred no explanation for vampires or "vampyr" if you're a pretentious twat. Or Danish. Over the shoddy science in this story. Evolution irl does not work like Pokemon ffs.
I liked Jason in the beginning but his personality more or less flies out the window after he meets Varic. I wanted to like Varic, but the possessiveness was not cute at all. I did however really like the narrator and he got me through the last bit of this nonsense story.

Not sure Why this story was written at all. Sounds more for history than a love story. So ssslllooooww in getting to the point...then the reader finds out that there's No Point..?

An fun fantasy romance. I always like the friends/family characters, big concepts and greater power structures of the worlds Mary Calmes writes.
However I felt a bit disappointed how the main characters priorities, goals, and job just go right out the window after insta love. But it's a fun romance novel so you just have to go with it.

The narrator made me fall in love with the book. Especially when he was imitating the other characters.
