      This was amazing! A must-read for any fan of the Machineries of Empire trilogy. Not recommended to new readers of YHL's work though.

      Collection set throughout the same universe as Ninefox Gambit, mostly following those characters. I really loved that this collection was able to play up the gentle & quotidian sides of that series, which are present but buried under a lot of plot, surreality, and violence in those books. I was weirdly turned off by the book's actual structure, which put the author commentary directly after each story. Definitely not recommended as an entryway into Lee's work.

      brilliant short stories, some only a few pages long, a few novella length, filling out the world of the trilogy Machineries of Empire that begins with Ninefox Gambit. where the trilogy is dense and techy, these are mostly about Jedao, and they feel both casual and personal. absolutely essential for anyone interested in the series, or in the very complicated character at the center of it, and in style a revelation.

      You will want this bookYoon Ha Lee calls several of these stories "gimmick flash" stories. Gimmick flash stories are short and revolve around some specific idea (the gimmick). Mr. Lee explains that he makes money (or at least he used to) by writing them on demand for paying clients. Cool.All the stories here fit directly into the Hexarchate universe but they occur at different times. Most are about Jadeo.I liked some of them very much, and enjoyed the rest. For followers of Yoon Ha Lee, this collection is a must have.I received a review copy of "Hexarchate Stories: Machineries of Empire" by Yoon Ha Lee from Rebellion through NetGalley.com.

      Mostly short stories about Jedao and Cheris’s younger lives, but a final longer story about their unwilling reunion which was very satisfying (and Jedao’s not quite human nature is more fully elaborated in fairly yucky ways).
