Nominated for the prestigious award for its “originality, merit, and impact” and lauded as the breakout of 2018 by George Saunders, Roxane Gay, and Tommy Orange, this searing debut short story collection skillfully weaves together satire and magical realism with today’s most pressing, politically-charged issues to create otherworldly tales.
The book is as wonderfully weird, subtly funny, and smartly written as its title. A quirky, stylized genre-bending Western filled with dark humor and a bit of gore, it channels old-timey pulp and Cormac McCarthy alike. John C. Reilly, Joaquin Phoenix, and Jake Gyllenhaal star in the movie adaptation, which somehow received no Oscar nods this season.
Cline’s novel is a thick barrage of nerdy pop culture nostalgia, formed into the shape of a post-apocalyptic bildungsroman. Narrated by Wil Wheaton, this book is full of moments that will make any true superfan chuckle. Even more easter eggs exist in the film adaptation, which is up for the best visual effects Oscar.
There’s no bigger Oscar snub this year than the much-lauded “Crazy Rich Asians” getting no nominations. It’s just plain insane, because by now you’ve surely heard just how crazy great this satirical romantic comedy is. Laugh along on a glamorous trip to Singapore as social classes and various cultures collide.
