I have over 20,000 contact hours (time in front of students) in classrooms and schools in k12 education here.
When I arrived and got my first job as a teacher, I had absolutely no experience standing up in front of a class. Finally, after teaching my first few classes and feeling completely overwhelmed, I asked my Taiwanese and foreign co-workers, “Uh, how?” The prevailing attitude that I encountered, though terribly polite, was “It’s your language, get in there and do it!” So I started figuring, thinking, and generally screwing up a lot.
This book is about my experiences in the classroom, how I teach, and how I look at teaching, learning and my students. From the few books on teaching I’ve read or skimmed through, I could see that none of them really talk about what to do, how to do it, and why. This book is a collection of the things I got right. I also talk about the mistakes I’ve made where I think they are helpful.
It is my fervent belief and hope that there is a little something in this book for every teacher out there in k12 education; whether in public, private, or k12 homeschooling. If nothing else, it should be different, make you think and help you to form your own theories and ideas about teaching.
Sincerely,
