About this ebook

On October 21, 2004 Jason Apollo Voss had a true epiphany: there was going to be a near-collapse on Wall Street and he should retire to exclusively pursue a spiritual practice. In electing to honor his vision he gave up a career in which the mutual fund he co-managed bested the NASDAQ by 77.0%, the S&P 500 by 49.1%, and the DJIA by 34.9%. Most of this success came from a detailed, scientific understanding of the right brain and its capacity for creative and intuitive thought. These secrets and their real world application are the specific focus and passion of the Intuitive Investor. Much more than just a book about investing, The Intuitive Investor is also a guide to healthy, mindful living. Scarcely have money, mind and spirit been brought together so potently.

The first thing you have to do when reading Jason Apollo Voss' very informative book, The Intuitive Investor, is to read carefully his description of the metaphor that structures the book. It is one that is familiar to many people, in fact it is widely known as the left brain right brain model. In general, this is the idea that the left hemisphere is the reasoning symbol dominated part of the person contrasted with the right immediate feeling/sensory dominated part. Voss states in no uncertain terms that the brain operates holistically and cannot be divided into two hemispheric personalities in the physically healthy person. We can use the simplistic metaphor to help us understand the information gathering and decision making of a complex integrated investor. The interesting book is organized systematically with plenty of room for creativity, the art of being a person and investor. To have the freedom to be creative, one must be fluent in knowledge of the task at hand, understand one's inner life of conscious and unconscious attitudes, and be skilled in decision making and action. This requires work that is made easier by the structure of Voss' book. Continuing with the left/right brain metaphor, creativity is the idea that the whole brain (person) is greater than the sum of the parts. You can venture into new territory not exactly fearlessly but with anxiety controlled effectively. You can become "non-attached" and therefore open to approach or avoid an investment intuitively. Of course, once an action is taken, assessment of the outcome is necessary to modify the next action. Voss describes the potency of four principles in broad based behavior and philosophy and how they apply to specific acts of investing. Principles of Infinity, Paradox, Harmonizing, and Action are discussed as the natural outcome of information presented in preceding chapters of the book. Meditation helps to organize and integrate these four principles in reverse order from the development of them in the person. Meditation helps the person to understand that, like the two hemispheres of the brain, there is a continuum of knowledge, feelings, and actions anchored by logic at one end and artistic awareness at the other. Keeping a journal allows you to perceive that you can travel unimpeded between the two poles of the continuum. At the end of his book, Voss shows us that intuition is not a shot in the dark, but rather an opening of the dark, an enlightenment of person, place, and time. Applied to investing, people can use inspiration, thoughts, words, and deeds in a whole brain fashion to make choices and accept consequences. And, for crying out loud, it is fun and rewarding. Voss gives examples of investors (including him) who have had great success using this approach and can be described as self actualizing. Peak experiences are not only possible but also frequent when investing intuitively and reading The Intuitive Investor.
