Thatcher gives Adrienne a crash course in the business...and they share an instant attraction. But there is a mystery about their situation: what is it about Fiona, the Blue Bistro's chef, that captures Thatcher's attention again and again? And why does such a successful restaurant seem to be in its final season before closing its doors for good? Author

Elin Hilderbrand

Elin Hilderbrand lives on Nantucket, has three children and is the author of 27 novels, including SUMMER OF ‘69.  Elin met Dottie in the spring of 2017 at the annual Post & Courier luncheon in Charleston and Elin says, “It was love at first sight.” The two authors proceeded to meet on Nantucket every chance they got and they texted and emailed non-stop. They dreamed of doing a joint cooking show called “Cook the Books,” where they would invite a third author on to make a signature dish for each episode. They also talked about a cookbook called “The Southern Belle and the Gray Lady.” Elin’s summer of 2020 novel, 28 Summers, is dedicated to Dottie and Dottie makes a cameo appearance in Elin’s summer of 2021 novel, Golden Girl. “I will never again have a writer friend like Dottie,” Elin says. “Those of you who knew her understand what I mean, and those of you who didn’t will just have to trust me. They broke the mold.”

The Blue Bistro by Elin HildenbrandFood menu sounds delicious! Last summer for the bistro to be open on Nantucket Island in MA. Adrian Deely was just on the island from Colorado with borrowed money and a lot of debt. She ends up in a room with other college girls and goes to apply for a job at the bistro.Thatcher Smith is the owner and he agrees to let her work at the bistro. Love how the bar is blue and the story behind it. The job of hostessing and accepting reservations was something she liked after the first hour. She's becoming familiar with the locals and the people who come into the bistro. We learn about her parents in the past and her father and new woman plan to pay a visit to the island to see her at work. She knows the chef is really sick and that Thatch will take her on vacation when the bistro closes for the final time after the summer. She is in love with him and she knows he has to go and what his problems are.Although there are a lot of people in the book they are easy to follow as they all do different jobs and even the patrons are easy to follow as you learn more about them. Her father and the dental hygienist are there to spend soem time with her on the island and she is so nervous...Health problems arise earlier then expected causing many to make rash decisions that they think is the right thing to do. I loved, loved, loved this book except for the ending. It was so unrealistic so I was only able to give it 3 stars instead of 4.

Adrienne has certainly had her issues with relationships over the years...her mother's death from ovarian cancer and how she has difficulty acknowledging her mother is deceased after all of these years. Her inability to completely accept her father's relationship with Mavis...Michael Sullivan wanted to marry her and she takes off. Doug Reidel stole her savings and was stealing money from the hotel rooms where she worked in order to support his cocaine habit. She heads to Nantucket to start anew and ends up working in an environment that she is not familiar with...the Blue Bistro. She has never in her life waited tables and now all of a sudden she is the hostess for an EXTREMELY popular restaurant that is closing at the end of the summer. The majority of the novel revolves around the events that happen at the restaurant...from the staff to the dining guests. A key component of the story is the interesting triangle between Fiona, Thatcher, and Adrienne. Fiona is the chef of the restaurant and seems to have a unique hold over Thatcher. Despite this hold, Thatcher seems to have feelings for Adrienne. Throughout the final season at the Blue Bistro, these relationships unfold to create a truly interesting story.Elin Hilderbrand has a unique ability to pull you in and make you a part of the story. Even after I finished the book , I continued to wonder...will Adrienne have a real relationship with Thatcher or would his love/fascination for Fiona always overshadow him?

This book started out with a menu. A menu that sounded absolutely delightful. The book ended with me in tears. Not an uncommon occurrence when I'm reading. It's also a book that I started and finished in the same afternoon. The book centers around Adrienne Dealey, a 28 year old woman who has just left a bad relationship in Aspen (a really bad relationship where she turned in her boyfriend for theft) and ended up on a boat to Nantucket. There she ends up with a job at a restaurant, as the assistant manager-with no restaurant experience. She has spent the last several years working in resort hotels, in Florida, in Thailand, in New England and Aspen but has no experience in restaurants. But, Thatcher Smith, the Proprietor, for some unknown reason, gives her a job as his assistant manager.Reading this book made me want to work in this kind of environment-and I have even less experience in restaurants than Adrienne-unless you count nine months working in the service deli of a grocery store, not my proudest moments and a job that, although I got high marks on customer service, never really broke into the service deli world! As in every novel, there are catches. The first one is Fiona Kemp, the Executive Chef of the restaurant and best friend of Thatcher from childhood in South Bend, Indiana. Is there something more with Thatcher and Fiona? It's unclear at the beginning but it is clear that there is something desperately wrong with Fiona. She lets nearly no one into her kitchen and there are many other signs that all is not right in Nantucket. Another catch is Adrienne herself, she is so unsure of herself, so afraid of the mistakes that she's made in the past that she's almost afraid to let herself go again.Thatcher and Adrienne end up in a relationship, albeit not the normal one since clearly Thatcher has placed Fiona at the top of his priority list. I both hated and pitied Fiona throughout the book and was really ready to throttle her at the end. I loved Adrienne and all her flaws and Thatcher drove me nuts but reminded me of those I've loved in the past and may still care about today. In fact, throughout reading this book, I was constantly reminded of someone that I'd not thought of in so long as a result of the Thatcher character. It's not that Thatcher is like this person, in many ways they are complete opposites, but there was something that made this person come to my mind over and over again while reading The Blue Bistro. This is definitely a book that will stay with me and when I think of this book, I will think of that person that should be, and very much is-most of the time-in my past.

This story is about a woman named adrienne who goes to Nantucket to start a whole new life and ends up finding not only a brand new career but a brand new life as well. She is immediately offered a job as assistant manager at the blue bistro which is one of nantuckets finest restarants. She is soon drawn to Thatcher who is one of the owners, but his unique friendship with the other owner Fiona always seems to get in the way.I did really enjoy this book but found it a little predictable. The characters were all unique and I liked them but the storyline itself I guessed all along. I did enjoy elin hilderbrands writing style and would def. Be interested in checking out some more of her titles.

Adrienne arrives on Nantucket looking for a job and begins work as the assistant manager of the Blue Bistro. The reader learns along with Adrienne about what it takes to manage this very popular restaurant. We are introduced to the various customers. Along the way we learn about the food that makes this place so popular. This is ultimately a book about relationships.... with friends, family, customers and food. This book is very well written with many breaks in the narrative that make it easy to put down and pick up over and over again.

I really liked this book. It's set on Nantucket in a fictitious restaurant called, you guessed it, The Blue Bistro. The bistro is famous for its enticing food combinations (candy-striped beets and goat cheese, banana French toast with chocolate syrup). I loved the descriptions of the dishes and the restaurant business - the gossip, the relationships. The only false notes for me were: Fiona, the chef (I didn't care for her) and the sudden sadness near the ending (though the book ultimately ended on a happy note).

This is the first novel I read by this author, and probably the last. I really enjoyed the character descriptions of this book, as well as the insider view to working in a fine restaurant. The ending totally screwed up this book for me. (Spoiler alert!) I kept waiting for things to turn around, for the restaurant to stay open instead of turning into some rich person's pleasure dome, and for Adrienne to end up with Thatcher. I simply could not believe the way it ended. I understand sacrificing oneself for one's friends, but Thatcher should at least have been man enough to tell Adrienne what was going on with Fiona and the probable outcome of their relationship. What a jerk! What a schmaltzy finale. So sorry it ended as it did, such a depressing and unrealistic, unfulfilled ending. Boo, hiss!

I loved this---it has to be the way she writes because I liked another of her books so much and am on my way to pick up another one of hers today. What a great story that just kept moving right along and I kept saying to myself, out loud, "OH, I LIKE this book!!"
