How To Lower Your Cholesterol Naturally - Steffan Abel

Introduction

Cholesterol-lowering drugs have become some of the most popular ‘just in case’ drugs on the market – in fact Lipitor and Zocor are the two top selling drugs in America!

Often they are prescribed to anyone who may be at risk from developing heart disease (and because they keep lowering the level at which cholesterol is apparently safe this is virtually everybody) and the rate at which they are prescribed just keeps on growing...

In fact, the use of statin medications has been increasing by an average of 12 per cent a year, and this is a trend that is likely to continue!

Unfortunately, a study from Harvard has shown that just 8 per cent of people taking a statin had a heart condition and the rest were merely considered to be at risk! The study also went on to show that the statins didn’t reduce the number of deaths, even among those with a known heart condition. In fact, they had no positive affect whatsoever on the 10,990 women who took it!

A 2006 study in The Archives of Internal Medicine looked at seven trials of statin use in nearly 43,000 patients, mostly middle-aged men without heart disease. In that review, statins didn’t lower mortality.

Nor did they in a study called Prosper, published in The Lancet in 2002, which studied statin use in people 70 and older. Nor did they in a 2004 review in The Journal of the American Medical Association, which looked at 13 studies of nearly 20,000 women, both healthy and with established heart disease.

All of this suggests that far too many people are taking these drugs with no positive outcome - and even more worryingly they may actually be causing the heart conditions they’re supposed to be preventing.

So what can you do...?

How to Lower your Cholesterol Naturally will show you the simple steps you can take to reduce your bad cholesterol, increase your good cholesterol and improve your health – all without drugs!

Within the pages of this book I want to show you that lowering your cholesterol is not only possible but easily achievable by following a few simple steps and by using a few readily available supplements!

So, firstly I want to congratulate you on your purchase and secondly urge you to read it and then take action!

Compiled neatly in one place (i.e. this book!) there are practical tips on diet, lifestyle and supplements – including vitamins, minerals and herbs – all of which will improve you health and lower your cholesterol. They are all readily available from most health food shops or over the Internet – so you have no excuses for not trying them out!

Although, I have had very good results using the information you now have in your hands, every case is different and I would urge you to seek advice from elsewhere (including your healthcare provider) before using any of the many good ideas you will find here especially if you are already taking prescribed medications.

It is also important to remember that all supplements work differently with everyone. It is impossible to say which ones may work best for you or even how long it may be before you notice any changes to your cholesterol – but whichever ones you choose they will make a difference!

So, with that said I wish you all the best and ask you to start lowering your cholesterol now!

Cholesterol

Mainstream medicine has touted the dangers of high cholesterol for years and in many cases has made this one of the top priority areas for improving overall health. In many cases not only do I believe they are wrong to place such emphasis on this area, but I also believe that they are dangerously wrong when the only way they see fit to lower these levels is by the use of medication.

It is true that, in certain circumstances, high blood cholesterol levels can cause the build up of plaques in blood vessels and arteries which can reduce blood flow to the heart, brain and other vital organs and that these deposits can then deprive these areas of the oxygen, blood flow and nutrients that they need…

But it is also important to note that cholesterol is a basic component of cells, it is also needed for the production of certain hormones and is necessary (if not vital) for the brain and nervous system to function correctly. Far from being the enemy it is portrayed as – cholesterol is vital for life.

Cholesterol is:

Found in most body tissues – as it makes up cell membranes.

A key ingredient in optimal brain and nerve health

The raw material for bile salts.

An essential ingredient in the manufacture of vitamin D.

Vital for the production of certain hormones in particular cortisol, DHEA as well as the sex hormones testosterone, oestrogen and progesterone.

Important for the production of various neurotransmitters.

A vital antioxidant that helps neutralise the free radicals that we either eat or produce in the digestive process.

A major protection against colon cancer as it increases bowel health and strengthens the walls of the intestines

To maintain the correct functioning of your brain and nervous system your body actually makes cholesterol (this is one of the jobs of the liver) and then moves it to where it is needed through the blood supply – and in order to do this it needs a perfect balance of good and bad cholesterol! Therefore, it makes sense that, if you can keep your body working correctly you will keep the right balance of cholesterol that your body needs – and we will cover how you can do this in a moment.

One of the factors that you have direct control over and that plays an important role in balancing your cholesterol is your diet. It is understandable that if you choose to eat foods that are high in cholesterol then the amount of cholesterol in your body and in particular your bloodstream may increase. It also makes sense that if you consume a diet that is not only nutritional but also contains foods that have lower levels of cholesterol (or ones that can even safely reduce your own levels of cholesterol) then the amount circulating in your body will go down. This is one of the aims of this book – showing you the foods, supplements and herbs that will help you keep your cholesterol levels low and your heart and brain functioning properly.

I will also cover other simple steps you can take that will lower your cholesterol without medication (such as relaxation techniques, reducing your smoking and simple exercises) but first I want to go into a little more detail with regards to the drug side of treatment that is so often touted as the answer to everything!

It is widely agreed in the medical field that everyone should have their cholesterol levels checked at least once every 5 years. This is usually done by means of a blood test called a lipoprotein profile and it is carried out after a 9 to 12 hour fast. This will give you information about your total levels of cholesterol, your LDL and HDL levels (your bad and good cholesterol) and the levels of triglycerides (another fat that is found in the blood).
