Introduction
Hello, my name is Allisa.
In 2008 I was a new mother with a three month-old...and a plan. I set out to create an online shop that would both earn income and allow me to stay at home and raise our son. Like many other parents, I wanted the best of both worlds. So I made the switch from teacher to entrepreneur, though admittedly I had no idea what I was getting myself into.
I set up my handbag shop over the course of a week and crossed my fingers. The night my first bag sold I jumped down the stairs, exclaiming I did it, I did it!
At that point I thought the hardest bits were over. I mean, during my newborn son’s naps I had created my own little space and delved into this whole business thing. What could be more difficult than that? I thought that was it. Sew it and they will come.
Sadly, yet...excitingly, I was wrong.
Running my shop took a whole lot more time, energy, creativity, failure, risk, and moxie than I had imagined.
But it’s all been worth it.
Upon realizing it was going to be a long road to success, I drew upon my approach as a teacher; research, plan, and make it work. And that’s what I did. I snuck away with all my husband’s business and marketing books, reading them late into the night. I checked out even more books from the library. I scoured the selling site Etsy for any tips and advice. I wrote out my strategy and crunched some numbers. I made a lot of mistakes. But I also continued to improve my shop, and I soon found success - as I measure it anyway. My shop is profitable and I stay home to raise our sons.
Sometimes I feel like the luckiest gal around. Which is why I decided to write this book.
Whether you’re planning on starting a new shop or wanting to invigorate one you’ve already launched, I’d like to help. I’m offering my experience and perspectives in running a successful online shop so that others may share this piece of happiness and success I’ve found.
This book:
With this book, I hope to ignite your creative spark and help you build an online space authentically yours. Whether it’s a personal website or through a selling venue, think of it as your own little place in the world. As I’m sure you’ve also come to realize, starting a shop is easy – making it remarkable is the tough part. Drawing from my experience in starting and running a successful shop, I share insights and lessons I learned along the way. Although I created my shop on Etsy, the principles in this book apply to anyone looking to start an online handmade business. The main theme here is grabbing hold, finding your spark, and creating your own little successful space. Because running a shop can be all about excitement and hope and profit, but it’s also about telling the story of who you are and what you create.
This book is intended for those looking to start a brand new online shop and for those who have already taken the leap but need a bit of a jumpstart. It’s chock full of tips and inside bits I learned the hard way. Plus I’ve included pearls of wisdom from online superstars and industry experts in sections I call shops (or sites) that shine
. I avoid generic how-to tips (I figure you know how to insert photos and determine shipping information, for example) and instead offer a discussion to motivate, inspire, and ignite the spark for creative business.
For entrepreneurs just starting out, you may want to grab a cup of coffee and find a big ‘ol comfy chair to sit down in and read it front to back. At least familiarize yourself with the concepts. If, however, you’ve already taken the leap, go ahead and pick and choose the chapters and topics you need. This book will hopefully serve as a resource you can refer back to again and again. I do encourage every reader to start with Chapter 1, as it discusses your spark...and really, that is where it all begins.
A heartfelt thank you to all the amazing and inspiring contributors who shared their wisdom for this book. Many thanks to my husband; editor and motivator in chief. And to my charming little boys - mama’s inspiration to do big things.
