Introduction
My name is Kevin. When I was 36 years-old, I retired from my job. I didn’t go to medical school. I didn’t study law. I have never worked for a company. In fact, I have never had a high paying job.
When I finished high school, my grades were not great. As my grades didn’t give me much choice, I decided to become a teacher. I told my father and he assured me getting an education is the most important thing.
Unfortunately for me, teaching children was not something I enjoyed. What's worse was that people kept telling me I was good at it. This further frustrated me because I was bored out of mind. Eventually, I quit my job, started a punk-rock band and toured around Asia between part-time tutoring.
Money definitely did not come easily, and after 3 years and one last energetic show in a smoky basement in Tokyo, I put my guitar down and reluctantly went back to teaching.
My father was a self-employed painter and while he also didn’t get a high paying salary, he worked hard enough to provide his family with a house that was walking distance to the beach, a holiday in the summer, and the occasional family meal at a local restaurant.
In return, my father visited the chiropractor weekly for damaging his spine at work and gave up many Saturdays to earn extra money. He had always reminded me of the importance of a good education, so I didn’t have to break my back making money. He’s now 66 years old and still working as a painter.
The university I attended was not near the beach. This meant I had to move to the city. I was excited about living on my own, going to university parties, and seeing live bands. Of course, all this cost money, so I had to work on weekends. I worked at all kinds of jobs. I was a part-time salesclerk, apple picker, book salesperson, laborer, tutor, tile-grouter, restaurant waiter, bar tender and sometimes, even a painter with Dad.
One weekend, I was working on the rich side of town. The house I was working on was the biggest, most beautiful house I’d had ever seen. The inside was incredibly amazing, I was reluctant to walk on the carpet or sit on the chairs in case my work clothes would damage the furniture.
This house had a spa pool in the backyard looking over the ocean. As I looked out at the breathtaking ocean view, the owner told me you could see dolphins playing in the morning.
I had heard enough! This guy knew how to live, and it required a lot of money.
I sheepishly asked him how he was able to afford such an amazing home. Expecting him to tell me he was a surgeon, lawyer, or company executive, he proudly said, My wife and I are real estate investors.
His response surprised me. I had met plenty of real estate agents. These guys usually drove Toyotas. I'd never met a real estate investor before. This guy drove a Porsche.
He then, seemingly quite proud of himself, walked back inside his beautiful house and I began painting the outside of it.
Later that afternoon, I told him how much I admired his home. I also told him that I was studying to be a school teacher and I
