THE ARTICLE (L’ARTICLE)
In French there are only two genders: masculine and feminine.
Definite article (L’article défini)
Definite article and indefinite article are placed before the noun and apart from it.
Singular
Masculine: le (livre); l’(élève)
Feminine: la (table) l’(armoire)
Plural
Masculine and Feminine
les (livres, tables); les (élèves, armoires)
Before a noun that starts with a vowel or with a mute h, the articles le, la lose the vowel and replace it with a apostrophe.
Example:
LE
le cahier
le pupitre
LA
la gravure
la gomme
L’
l’écolier
l’école
l’homme
l’heure
Indefinite article (L’article indéfini)
Singular
Masculine: un (livre)
Feminine: une (table)
Plural
Masculine and Feminine: des (livres, tables)
Example:
UN
un mur
un banc
UNE
une porte
une chaise
DES
des murs
des bancs
des portes
des chaises
Observations
The nouns that are preceded by the des article are translated, generally, without article in English.
Dans les classe il y a des bancs – In the classroom there are bancs.
Sometimes it`s translated with some.
Je vois des bancs – I see some boats
The omission of the article
before people names
Jean et Marie vont à l’école.

before a noun that has a possessive adjective before it
