What lies behind us and what lies ahead of us are tiny matters compared to what lives within us.

    -Henry David Thoreau

    Forward

I first started to write this account as a cathartic experience, and then I started to realize that other people could benefit by my story, so I decided to make it available to others. All of the names and places have been changed within in order to protect the victims’ identities and privacy, as many have chosen to put that part of their lives behind them.

I hope this account helps you as much as hearing other people’s story helped me.

    Introduction

If you are reading this account of my rape, chances are that you or someone close to you has had a similar experience. You are not alone!! You may feel alone, but that is the difference between feeling and fact.

According to the FBI there were 84,767 sexual assaults in the United States in 2010 (Boston Globe, How many rapes in US? Depends on the definition, September 29, 2011, by Erica Goode, http://www.bostonglobe.com/news/nation/2011/09/28/how-many-rapes-depends-definition/MJ3jNGvsvKGTe8wkBF7X0H/story.html). That’s enough to populate a medium sized city! However, the statistics don’t stop there, because the definition of ‘sexual assault’ used by the FBI is more than 80 years old, and doesn’t include cases of oral or anal penetration, male victims, object penetration, or cases where the victims were under the influence of a substance. Therefore, many rape cases are not counted as rapes in the yearly totals. The definition of ‘sexual assault’ held by the FBI is, "the carnal knowledge of a female, forcibly and against her will.’’ This report total for sexual assault, as well as all violent crimes, is voluntarily provided by the country’s more than 18,000 law enforcement agencies.

This leaves the very high total even more in doubt due to the ungoverned nature of the reporting. In addition, these totals only include reported cases. From personal experience, I know that many rape cases go unreported, due to fear of the reporting process, a want to just get the event behind them, or even guilt. (Yes guilt let me just say that rape is NEVER the victims fault.) In fact, the above total doesn’t include my rape case, but I’m getting ahead of myself.

In addition 64% of rapes or sexual assaults are not reported to the police (2001, National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS)). One out of every six American women has been the victims of an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime (1998, NIJC & CDC). 1 in 3 women will be the victims of a sexual assault by their 18th birthday (1998, NIJC & CDC ).

About 3% of American men - about 1 in 35 have experienced an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime (1998, NIJC & CDC ). 1 in 6 men
