About this ebook

Mitt Romney adpted a series of Hail Mary's to try to win the presidency. The first Hail Mary was the selection of Paul Ryan for V.P. Romney is terrified of the G.O.P. Right Wing. After all, Romney is not the first choice of the conservatives.
Paul Ryan is the darling of the conservatives. As the general public begins to know him, however,Ryan is seen as anything but the "fiscal hawk" portrayed by Republicans.
Ryan voted for every budget-busting bill sponsored by George W. Bush, including two wars, the Presription Drug Act of 2003 and the Bush Tax Cuts of 2001 and 2003. Neither Ryan nor Bush made any provision to pay for any of this profligacy.
It was only when Barack Obama took office that Ryan went into negative mode. Moreover, on women's health care issues Ryan is as extreme as Todd Akin or Roy Blunt.
The Ryan Budget, known as the Path to Prosperity is an attack on the poor and the Middle Class.
The G.O.P. shows itself as the Greedy Oligarchs' Party. Republicans have forfeited their right to govern through their unholy alliance with the Christian Colaition and unwavering dedication to cutting taxes for the upper two percent.
The elction of November 6, 2012, may see the beginning of the end of thre G.O.P. Republicans realize they are the minority. Republicans seek to hold power through vote suppression. Nearly a dozen states tightened voter ID laws and shortened early voting availability.
If Republicans can take away the right to vote, they can take away your other rights.

    Preface

It’s déjà vu all over again. In 2008, John McCain’s Straight Talk Express ran out of gas as the economy tanked. McCain called a meeting of all the wizards. Something urgent was required. McCain needed a candidate for Vice President who would be a Game Changer. Mitt Romney showed up for an interview with a truckload of tax returns—that upon careful analysis likely would demonstrate every tax avoidance device recognized by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. McCain did not even want to have lunch with Romney, never mind have Mitt as a running mate. The wizards sent Romney packing with all of his tax returns, which Romney promptly restored to the vault in Zurich.

McCain felt more comfortable with his colleague, Joe Lieberman, as a running mate than with anyone else in the continental U.S. Senator Lieberman, however, carried the Independent label, after losing the Democratic Primary race in Connecticut in 2006 to Ned Lamont. If chosen, Lieberman would have been the only person to run as V.P for both major parties—after running unsuccessfully with Al Gore in 2000. The wizards informed McCain that the Right Wing would go berserk if McCain chose Lieberman.

However, no acceptable V.P. candidates for John McCain were evident from Maine to California or from Minnesota to Texas. One of the wizards volunteered that there was a conservative Governor in Wasilla who could shake things up. McCain asked eagerly, ‘Where the hell is Wasilla’. ‘That’s where Sara Palin, the Governor of Alaska, is from’, offered the wizard. McCain was interested. McCain met Governor Palin once at a conference. Palin was sharp, articulate, ambitious and sported Kawasaki glasses.

So it came to pass that the McCain Campaign decided to try a Hail Mary to salvage the cratering campaign of John McCain in 2008. It was not that the McCain Campaign was ineffective that placed it second, it was because economy was in free fall after eight years of Bush-Cheney. Fast forward to 2012. Mitt Romney outlasted the Seven Dwarfs to take the Republican Nomination, after surviving the torture of twenty debates. Conventional Wisdom was that Romney would pick another boring suit for V.P., and together they would put the Nation to sleep.

Romney began his 2012 Campaign based on a linear business plan and conventional Power Point blueprint that Romney thought would beat Barack Obama easily. Romney would announce over and over to the public that the economic recovery was too slow, with Gross Domestic Product at less than two percent and unemployment over eight percent. Voters would see the election as a referendum on Barack Obama. With these facts drilled into the populace by $800 million in advertising, the election would be a cakewalk. Besides, Romney knew how to create jobs.

Barack Obama took a more nuanced approach to the Campaign. If Romney claimed knowhow to create jobs from his experience at Bain Capital, then why not review Bain Capital’s record of managing targeted companies. When it turned out that Bain had a mixed record, sometimes as a chop shop, the presumed cakewalk for Romney in 2012 turned into a steeplechase that was ill suited to Oligarchs with dancing horses. Upon review, some Companies targeted by Bain Capital for leveraged buy-outs flourished. Others filed bankruptcy—with jobs, pensions and healthcare plans trashed. Romney may have created as many jobs in China and India as in the U.S.

Romney insisted that any inquiry into Bain Capital’s management of other companies was nothing more than character assassination. Moreover, only a voyeur or a person with nothing to do would want to peek into Romney’s Tax returns.

Romney lamented to MSNBC’s Chuck Todd that he wished the candidates would stick to the issues, namely the President’s effect on the Gross National Product, and not discuss such controversial issues as Romney’s tenure at Bain Capital or those troublesome tax returns.

Voters did not believe Romney’s mantra about a slow economy, and Romney sagged at the polls. Soon, it became apparent that the 2012 election would not be solely a referendum on Barack Obama. Romney had to yield to realties. Romney tacitly agreed that the 2012 election would be an issues election to determine the direction the Nation would take over the next four years or more.

The problem for Romney was that he instinctively and compulsively hides his position on most controversial issues, or he simply changes his position so many times that no one knows where he stands on any issue on any particular day. Women’s choice comes to mind. Romney changed his mind so many times that we simply do not know where he stands day to day.

Romney eschewed the safe choice for a V.P. Conventional wisdom held that Romney would select the least offensive candidate for V.P., someone like former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty or Ohio Senator Rob Portman. Romney decided that a Hail Mary might be the Game Changer that he needed. Throwing off his normally cautious approach, Romney announced his selection of Paul Ryan as V.P. candidate on August 11, 2012.

Democrats were intrigued by the opening the Ryan choice presented. It is not that Ryan is personally offensive or unattractive as a candidate. In many ways, Ryan is a story-book choice. At forty-two years of age, Ryan is a model All-American husband to an exemplary wife, and father to three wonderful children. Ryan works in the Capitol but supposedly not of the Capitol. Ryan reportedly sleeps in his office (after 8:00 P.M.) and has ferocious workouts in the House gym and on nearby jogging trails. Ryan’s Path to Prosperity, however, is strictly for Americans for Prosperity, LLC, a tax exempt propaganda-front owned by the Charles and David Koch (the Koch Brothers).

We get it. People with money want to retain as much of their wealth as possible. The Republican Party has two conflicting reasons to exist. First, placate the Christian Coalition and the Family Research Council. Second, resist all tax increases to protect the wealth of Oligarchs and Plutocrats. Taxes, however, are the price of government. If the wealthy want to avoid U.S taxes, they will have to make a deal with the Sultan of Brunei or stash money in the Cayman Islands.

"The choice of Sarah Palin is surely a Hail Mary pass."

    Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY), 2008.

    Chapter -1-

    The Hail Mary

Doug Flutie did not invent the Hail Mary. Flutie’s long pass to Gerald Phelan in the end zone in the final seconds to allow Boston College to beat Miami 47-45 on November 23, 1984, however, breathed new meaning into the term. Miami was the defending national champion. Flutie threw the ball sixty yards into a crowd of Hurricanes’ defenders. Somehow, Phelan jumped up to snatch ball, touchdown and game. Boston College went on to beat Houston in the Cotton Bowl 45-28 on New Year’s Day 1985. B.C. football has never been the same.

According to Wikipedia, "the [Hail Mary] expression goes back at least the 1930s, being used publicly in that decade by two former members of Notre Dame’s Four Horsemen, Elmer Layden and Jim Crowley. Originally meaning any sort of desperation play, a ‘Hail Mary’ gradually came to denote a long, low percentage pass. For more than forty years its use was largely confined to Notre Dame and other Catholic Universities."

Roger Staubach tossed a Hail Mary to Preston Pearson to help the Dallas Cowboys beat the Minnesota Vikings 17-14 in 1975. Whenever the situation looks hopeless, victory is possible by a Hail Mary. It does not always work, but the slight chance of success outweighs the risk of total failure.
