The 2nd in a series of 14 short stories by Abbie Joules as she recounts the exploits of her brother, Bendigo, and herself, growing up on a farm in east Texas in the late 40's and early 50's. Hard financial times prompt Ben to encourage Abbie to augment the families meager income by helping their prize sow, Matilda, to produce a litter of piglets, with the use of sourdough starter. It's really just a prank, but Abbie takes it to heart and the results are not what either of them expect. Learn what happens when two kids, looking for a laugh or a solution to a real problem, try to change Mother Nature's timetable.

I was born in Dalhart, Texas, received degrees at Texas A&M in Wildlife Science and Psychology, and did post graduate work at Utah State in ethology. I worked as a professional photographer and wildlife artist, and authored "The Guadalupe Mountains Of Texas", published by the University of Texas Press, a coffee table book of a west Texas national park. I then worked for 25 years as a wood craftsman and entrepreneur. I currently live in Redmond, Oregon, and avail myself of every opportunity to paddle the wild rivers of the Pacific Northwest, from California to northern Canada and Alaska.

Following Ben's instructions to the letter, I lifted the crock of sourdough starter out from under the pantry floor where the earth kept it at a cool temperature. After filling a bucket three quarters full of flour, I poured in the starter, added some warm water from off the stove, and mixed the ingredients into a bubbling slurry.
