In the next twenty-five years, Spain began to colonize the lands Columbus claimed and Cortez brought down the Aztec Empire, creating New Spain in the New World. Eighty years after that, the conquest reached New Mexico.

    There, Andorra Sandoval, daughter of a New Mexico rancher and an English playgirl, explores her family's connection to that conquest, while a fascinating artist and his needy teenage daughter tempt her toward a fuller life.

    Carolyn Kingson was born in New Orleans and received a Ph.D. from Tulane in 1969. She spent thirty-seven years in a small village in northern New Mexico and now lives in Mexico with her husband, dividing time between San Pancho on the Pacific coast in the winter and San Sebastian in the mountains in the summer.
