Social policy scholar Andrea Louise Campbell thought she knew almost everything there was to know about the means-tested assistance programs until her in-laws, the Wagners, met with tragedy.
Marcella Wagner was the victim in a car accident which paralyzed her from the neck down. She was in her third trimester at the time of the accident, but thankfully, the baby was healthy. This physical and emotional tragedy became the end of life as they knew it. Neither Marcella, nor her husband, Dave, had health insurance, so the accident plunged the newly formed family into means-tested social assistance.
Campbell quickly learned firsthand that the government manuals and scholarly analyses fall short of accurately explaining how these programs really affect the lives of their dependents. Trapped in America's Safety Net goes behind the statistics and ideological battles to follow the story of a real family as they struggle to navigate a system that was supposedly built to protect them. This book explores themes of economic inequality in America, offering up practical solutions for emotional topics.
