Preface

Staad Pro V8i for beginners is the first book in the series of Staad Pro. This book is written to satisfy the requirements of under graduate and post graduate Civil Engineers who does not have prior knowledge in Staad Pro. The present book explains many facilities available in Staad Pro in detail.

The objective of this book is to make the readers to learn STAAD PRO on their own without any tutors. A few books are available on this subject and the available books follow American/ British examples to explain the commands. This is a first attempt to explain the Staad Pro with Indian examples.

It must be understood by the reader that this will not teach design. It helps to learn the Staad Pro only. To become a designer one should learn design concepts and this platform will be a good tool to implement the ideas.

The author has presented in detail with a sequence of snap shots and explanation of examples in step by step procedure. This procedure will clear many doubts of learners. At this stage, the author would like to thank S.Surekha, Bindu and Naga Lakshmi for involved in preparation of Staad Pro, snap shots and graphics required for the book my daughter T.Tejaswi for helping me in composing the graphics. In the end of the book, the author has given a list of books to be studied by the reader to become a good designer. A designer should learn how to do a design without using any software. Then only, he / she can understand the concepts thoroughly and can become a good structural designer.

After reading and practicing the example problems in this book the reader will be able to model and design small structures. By practicing further and following the code clauses carefully , he will be able to design complecated structures also. In annexure-2 list of important code books has been given for reference.

The author would like to give detailed design procedures in his next book Staad Pro V8i for professionals with Indian examples.

Chapter 1

Introduction

Overview of Staad Pro Environment

Menus and Toolbars

Introduction

STAAD/Pro offers general purpose structural analysis and design along with extensive model generation and post-processing facilities. All these features are integrated in one common Graphical User Interface (GUI).

Who should read this book ?

The students and structural design professionals who do not have prior knowledge on STAAD PRO software can read this book and learn modeling and designing in STAAD PRO. To help the readers a step by step procedure is adopted in explaining the example problems which starts from Chapter -2

This book deals with overview of Staad Pro environment i.e. explanation of components of staad pro screen, model generation and performing analysis and design. The STAAD input file can be created through a text editor or the GUI Modeling facility. In the early versions of STAAD such as STAAD-III, model is generated through input editor only. In general, any text editor may be utilized to edit/create the STD input file. The GUI Modeling facility creates the input file through an interactive menu-driven graphics oriented procedure. There are many versions of staad Pro .The screens shown in this book have been produced from STAAD PRO V8i .

One should know that just learning STAAD Pro does not make any one a structural designer unless he knows the design concepts. But STAAD Pro is the best and worldwide accepted software for design engineers. Besides learning this software the reader is advised to develop knowledge of design concepts in RCC and steel structures.

As this book is meant for beginners, the scope of this book is creation and design of small structures, with application of different loads on the structure.

Over view of Staad Pro environment

Before going to the examples, it is necessary to introduce the Staad Pro environment to the readers. So, introduction of Staad Pro environment is done briefly. The reader should note that the use of all menus will be learnt by the reader while going through the example problems. He or she need not worry about the details of the menus and commands given in this chapter. In fact the reader can understand this chapter after going through the exercise problems. Anyhow to understand new terminology it is advised to read this chapter. And the reader will know that such menus and commands are available in this software.

Unit Systems

The user is allowed to input data and request output in almost all commonly used engineering unit systems including MKS, SI and FPS. In the input file, the user may change units as many times as required. Mix and match between length and force units from different unit systems is also allowed. The input-unit for angles (or rotations) is degrees. However, in JOINT DISPLACEMENT output, the rotations are provided in radians. For all output, the units are clearly specified by the program.

Global Coordinate system

Cartesian Coordinate System :

This coordinate system is a rectangular coordinate system (X, Y, Z) which follows the orthogonal right hand rule.

This coordinate system may be used to define the joint locations and loading directions. The translational degrees of freedom are denoted by u1, u2, u3 and the rotational degrees of freedom are denoted by u4, u5 & u6.

(angle in degrees). The Z coordinate is identical to the Z coordinate of the cartesian system and its positive direction is determined by the right hand rule.

Overview of STAAD PRO menus

Details of all the menus is available in Staad Pro manual. However the details are given here for the benefit of readers.

A Sample of the STAAD / Pro Screen is given in figure 1.4. The Screen has four major elements as described below.

Figure 1.4

1. Menu bar

Located at the top of the screen, the menu bar gives access to all the facilities of Staad Pro.

2. Tool bar

The dockable toolbar gives access to the most frequently used commands. You may also create your own customized toolbar.

3. Main Window

This is the largest area at the centre of the screen, where the model and the results are displayed.

4. Page Control

The page control is a set of tabs that appear to the left of the main window. There are two rows of tabs for accessing pages and sub pages. Each sub page allows you to perform specific tasks. The organization of the pages, from top to bottom, represents the logical sequence of operations, for example, definition of beams, specification of member properties, loading, and so on.

Each page tab has a name and an icon for easy identification. The name on the tabs may or may not appear depending on the your screen resolution and the size of the Staad Pro window. However, the icons on the page control tabs always appear.

The pages in the page control area depend on the mode of operation. The mode of operation may be set from the mode menu from the menu bar. Note that the tables and other dialog boxes in the data area are physically separate windows. In other words, you may move the beam table or the node table from their usual right corner position to other places. If you need to see more of the main window, simply maximize it. You may still access the data table by using the window menu from the menu bar. The icons in the toolbar as well as in the page control area offer tool tip help. If you are not sure what a particular icon represents, simply move your mouse on top of the icon and wait a moment. A floating Tool tip help will identify the icon. The Staad Pro menu items are not page-dependent. This means that you may access any menu item at any point in time

The Mode of Operation

Staad Pro offers you several Modes of operation. These modes may be accessed though the mode menu from the menu bar. The tabbed items in the page control area change depending on the current mode. A check mark beside the menu item indicates that the specific item is selected.

Most important modes are Modeling mode and Post Processing mode.

Modeling

In the modeling mode, you generate your model geometry, specify loads, supports, and so on. By default, when the program starts or a structure is opened, you are always in the modeling mode.

Post Processing

The post processing mode allows you to perform post analysis result verification, query, report generation, and so on.
