Broken (prelude) - Robert Reade
INTRODUCTION:
This is the back story of one of the most pivotal characters in The Six Samurai of the West
series. Each book in the three part series is a sixty–thousand word book that can be read as a standalone, or as an ongoing saga.
I did my best to avoid gratuitous violence. However, due to the nature of this genre the reader should be aware that there are graphic depictions of violence which some might find offensive.
Don’t forget to read the short author’s note at the end.
CHAPTER 1
Deflecting an oncoming blow, Kenji steps forward and locks the arch of his foot behind the heel of his opponent’s foot. After shifting his weight, the maneuver sends his opponent to the ground. Fighting an equal in both tactics and skill Kenji’s finishing blow is diverted before he can do any real damage. Wrestling on the ground, neither Kenji nor his opponent has a distinct advantage. Rolling over and over in the dirt until the two men nudge up against a rock, Kenji is turned onto his back.
Flailing like a helpless turtle attempting to flip over, Kenji struggles. With his opponent now gaining the upper hand, Kenji is pummeled by an onslaught of blows. Nearly unconscious, he is easily dragged to the edge of the craggy hill. Having an insurmountable advantage, his opponent pushes him closer to the edge. Waking up with his opponent straddling him and pressing down on his torso, Kenji is defenseless to divert the inevitable outcome.
Rushing adrenaline allows him to ignore his disadvantage and react with immediacy. Grabbing a small black orb from the belt on his waist, Kenji holds his breath and then slams it down. Gagging, from the dust and smoke, his opponent crumbles. Using the opportunity, Kenji escapes the defenseless position, and establishes a more aggressive one. Spinning, Kenji plants an overhead kick to the side of his once dominant opponent’s face. Diving on top of the stunned man, Kenji begins to batter him with a barrage of precise blows.
Drawing a bladed weapon, he leans forward and presses the blade into his opponent’s throat. Before the fight can continue, an unseen blow from a long stick connects with the side of Kenji’s face. Tasting blood in his mouth and looking up from the ground, he sees his father and leader of their clan, Otosan Asaka standing over him and his dazed opponent. Stop playing, there is work to be done!
Knowing that the fight has ended without a winner, Kenji and his brother Tadasu both glare at one another simultaneously. Seeing this gesture, Otosan raises his voice. Still fighting over the rich girl? When are you two going to wake up?
Attempting to hide his cough, Tadasu turns his head, but a clump of blood shoots out of his mouth and lands in the sand in front of him. Otosan Asaka glares at Kenji and comments. You can easily beat your brother, plus he is so ugly that he has no chance with her. Why do you two still fight?
With contempt and blatant disrespect, Tadasu scowls at his father. We are doing the ghost mission tonight, and since you two are still unable to work together, I will separate the tasks. Kenji will lead the mission and you will stay behind.
When Kenji stands up, he brushes the dust off his black ninja garb, then puts his mask back on and walks away without saying a word. When Tadasu stands, his father chastises him. Why do you cause trouble?
Understanding how it is inappropriate for him to disobey or voice an opinion on what was just said to him, Tadasu ignores expectations. I want to marry her!
Reacting to the outburst, his father hits him with his walking sick and shakes his head with disgust as he walks away. Staring at the ground Tadasu deliberates.
CHAPTER 2
Nearly invisible, but hiding in plain sight, each of the men in ninja group three focus on Kenji as he stares out at Yukihana Castle. For this special mission, Kenji is the chunin and carries all of the responsibility for the mission’s success or its failure. Since Yukihana Castle is a major stronghold and not at all an easy fortification to breech, Kenji has already initiated the first steps of his plan before the group even arrived.
Looking over at the elite unit that has accompanied him, he admires the well crafted lanterns worn on the backs of his hidden companions. These special props are replicas made from an original that was
