About this ebook

Dream of working at home?
Lots of people every day start an online business from home for many reasons. One reason is that they want to realize their dream of working from home. However, before you decide if it is a good idea for you then you should have a clear picture, not merely a dream, of what it is really like to work every day at home. One of the biggest things you will have to overcome if you decide that working from home is for you is that the years of going to work each day have ingrained a schedule into our lives. Now for a lot of people weekends and holidays are times to relax and the first thing that we ignore is that work schedule. Basically, your home becomes a place of relaxation, not a place of work.

Are you a good boss? If you have a home business, then you are your own boss. So you need to be able to plan and work to a schedule otherwise days can go by with nothing getting done. Remember, although you do not like to answer to a boss, by having a boss you do get things done. You will have to lose what I call the "hourly mentality". That is, a sense of entitlement about lunch hours, vacations, time off, etc. When working at home, when you don't work, you simply don't get paid. I
Guaranteed you will work harder than you ever did working for someone else. If you don't, you will fail. It's that simple. With your own business, you have the ability to choose when you work, how long you work, how long you take for lunch, how much you spend on your business expenses and how much money you make

One of the good things about having your own home business is that any money you make after expenses is yours to keep. You no longer have to trade time for money as you did working for a boss at an hourly or weekly rate of pay. Even though how much you make is unlimited you still have to put in the time and effort to build your home business to be successful. You can have more freedom to spend with your family and doing the things you want to do, but it takes planning and you must be prepared to work hard during your scheduled work time. It is so easy to neglect everything else in favor of your home business without careful planning and scheduling of your time. Mothers will know that kids can be very demanding at times so you may find that you still have to use child care facilities to get your work schedule done during the day instead of staying up late at night.

Working from home does save money as you no longer have to pay to commute to work, buy specific work clothes or buy lunch. If you like to network with other home workers you may now have morning coffee expenses to take into account. Remember, you still have to eat lunch at home each day and wear clothes, even if it is only to keep warm each day. The downside of working from home is that it can increase your household cooling and heating bills as you are now at home during the hours you used to be at work. So think about that dream you have about working online from home. Remember, it is still work and most
people tend to work harder for themselves. Is the dream real? Can you be your own boss and avoid distractions? You decide for yourself. I work seven days a week. Can you do that to be successful in the beginning?
This is a small business and work-at-home-mom, in the trenches, how-to guide! Using your personal home computer along with inexpensive software and supplies, you too can hit the home business jackpot! Let's Get Started!

    Give your business a name

One of the first and most important steps for every business is the selection of a name. Choosing the name of your business will have a lot to do with its success. People will make snap decisions simply based on their first impression of your business name. You want a name that will attract potential customers, help clients identify your businesses and build your business identity.

How can you choose a good business name? What are the considerations when making your selection?

Here are what some experts in the field, say about picking that perfect name.

    Consider The Future

Even if you are planning a small local business, plan for and think about the future when choosing your business name and think Big! Consider a name that can grow as your business grows.

    Avoid Being A Copy Cat

It is never advisable to copy existing or similar names. The point of marketing is to stand out and differentiate your business. Your company name is your brand. Is your name distinctive enough to stand out from the competition?

    Keep It Simple And Memorable

Keep the business name short and easy to say and spell. Avoid acronyms or names using initials unless they mean something. The last thing you want people to say is, How do you spell that? A good name is something that can be mentioned on the radio or over the phone without a lot of explanation. A great name does this and is memorable too.

    An Alphabetically Desirable Name Helps

Another naming technique is to get the best positioning at the front of a Yellow Pages listing by prefacing the name with the letter A. If you have a good name that happens to start with an A, this could bump it up to a great name, But if you have a lousy name and it is prefixed with an A, you’re not going to save it. Phone and directory advertising are only part of the marketing mix.

    Avoid Trendy Names

It seems that every few years, some new naming trend becomes popular. How many times have you seen Something R US? After these fads run their course you will be left with an outdated name and that’s probably what most people will think of your company too!

    You Need a Mailing Address

Your #1 job in marketing is establishing trust. Having an address on your website is an important trust and the credibility factor.

When you don’t have one, people wonder what you’re hiding. However, for personal privacy and safety reasons, it’s not a good idea to use your home address.

Here are five options for getting a business mailing address to erase skepticism while keeping your safety and personal boundaries intact:

    1. Get a post office box from your local USPS branch. The cost is minimal, it’s a tax deductible business expense and you can apply for, manage and pay for your PO box conveniently online. These days, the post office, even allows you to spell out the address which can look nicer on your letterhead than PO Box ###. Prices vary slightly from branch to branch depending on location and can cost as little as $8/month.

    2. Get a PO box from a USPS Approved Provider. Many of your local businesses (e.g., drug stores, hardware stores, grocery stores, etc.) have also been contracted Postal Units from which you can get a PO box. This expands your options for finding the nearest convenient location. You can use the link above to search, but I’ll be honest, you might also have to just ask around as I’ve found it doesn’t necessarily give you complete results.

    3. Get an EarthClassMail Virtual Mailroom. A bit pricey, but this is a really nifty service. You get an address you can use for your business and have mail sent to. They receive your mail and scan it into PDFs which can then be viewed and managed onscreen via your admin panel. Quickly and easily sort through junk mail and have them recycle or shred anything you don’t want. You can store your mail online and have them send you any physical pieces you like. These are just a few of the features and options available. Check it out at EarthClassMail.com.

    4. Get a Virtual Office Location. Many similar services are springing up these days that will provide you with a business mailing address
