About this ebook

The bestselling author and internationally celebrated physician and expert on nutrition offers an appealing, approachable health solution—eat the foods you love to lose weight and get healthy.

For years, we’ve been told that a healthy diet is heavy on meat, poultry, and fish, and avoids carbohydrates, particularly foods high in starch—empty calories harmful to our bodies.

But what if everything we’ve heard was backwards?

High in calories and cholesterol, animal fats and proteins too often leave you hungry and lead to overeating and weight gain. They are often the root causes of a host of avoidable health problems—from indigestion, ulcers, and constipation to obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. On the other hand, complex carbohydrates like whole grains, legumes, tubers, and other starches provide your body with essential proteins and nutrients that satisfy the appetite while simultaneously fighting illness. But Americans eat far too few calories from carbohydrates—only about forty percent, according to Dr. John McDougall, internationally renowned expert on nutrition and health, featured on the documentary Forks Over Knives.

The Healthiest Diet on the Planet helps us reclaim our health by enjoying nutritious starches, vegetables, and fruits. McDougall takes on the propaganda machines pushing dangerous, high-fat fad diets and cuts through the smoke and mirrors of the diet industry. He offers a clear, proven guide to what we should and shouldn’t eat to prevent disease, slow the aging process, improve our physical fitness, be kind to the environment, and be our most attractive selves.

Featuring two dozen color photos and mouth-watering, easy-to-follow recipes for buckwheat pancakes, breakfast tortillas, baked potato skins, rainbow risotto, red lentil soup, green enchiladas, dairy-free lasagna and pizza, and more, The Healthiest Diet on the Planet will help you look great, feel better, and forever change the way you think about health and nutrition.

Did not work for me at all. I was at the high end of the healthy weight range and just wanted to be a little slimmer. For ethical reasons I looked for a meat free diet plan. McDougall's recommendations left me constantly hungry, fearful of healthy and essential fats and I ended up overweight. I lost more than 20 lbs since starting to eat more protein and a lot more fat. Quite possibly the best thing, however, is the fact that I am actually satisfied with my food now and am not afraid to sauté my veggies with a little olive oil (tastes SO much better). My hair and nails thanked me too and are looking a lot healthier now. I do recognise that some people may find success eating a low fat diet and many are overly worried about whole unprocessed carbs. What I've also learned since reading this book, doctors are not registered dieticians and often have very little education on the subject matter. There are many plant based/vegan friendly dieticians out there who don't demonise any macronutrient and will instead help you eat a balanced plantbased diet that's more satisfying, less restrictive and arguably a lot healthier long term.

I gained 15 pounds following this book to a T. I also read 4 of his other books which are all the same. I am a healthy weight.. This is only for obese people where any diet would work. I am a physical therapist and personal trainer for over 15 years and do not recommend this book but I do recommend WFBP. Good luck!

its not all true. First of all, you need some good healthy oils in your body. Second of all, starched vegetables turn to sugars in our body so they are not that healthy you can eat endless of them like the writer suggests. Diabetes 2 people can't except having plenty of insulin. Nonstarchy vegetables however only do your body good. Third, no processed factory made food? what is tofu then and canned beans?? Every other recipe has them as a ingredient. I gave it 3 stars cause the intro was part right and interesting, and some recipes I could use but never would I live on this diet.

I started college in Sept of 1979 at age 18. I don't remember how Dr McDougall's came to me or where I bought it. I read it, and immediately knew it was not for me, it was way way too strict and joyless.

Fast forward in time and I am now 55, and he has written at least 3 books that I can think of, probably a great deal more as his wife publishes her recipes under both their names and the message is exactly the same. There is nothing in this book that I didn't read nearly 40 years ago. He wrote a book about 2 years ago called The Starch Solution, so it is completely pointless to continue to write new books and sell them at high prices ( mine is from the library however ) with the same exact message repeated book after book after book, with nothing new to say or add.

It is not a diet I could or would want to spend my life doing. It is basically sweet potatoes, white potatoes, pasta, rice, beans, a few fruits and a small amount of non starchy vegetables as well as bread and grains.

No oil at all, no olives, no soy, no fake 'meat ', no protein shakes, no home made veggie juices, no supplements, very little salt, sugar is allowed surprizingly, in addition to no meat, fish, fowl, dairy or eggs. Also no nuts.

So it is basically such a low fat limited diet that it is virtually fat free. Does it work ? Who knows, he says it does and maybe it does, but I see no harm at all in having 1 tablespoon a day of oil, a small handful of nuts or some olives, we do need some fat in our diets, and I tablespoon of oil is 14 grams so that is not excessive at all.

I can't recommend this book - however, if it works for you and your health improves then maybe he is on to something. I just don't want to spend whatever life I have left to live, especially being Italian, never having another olive again.
