About this ebook

Have you reached ‘that certain age’?

If so, this book can help you decide whether NOW is the right time for YOU to get on and do that thing you’ve always wanted to do.

Annie Weir shares some inspirational real-life examples of people who have achieved things a lot later in life than they’d planned.

Mixed in with that are:

  • thought-provoking questions to help you visualise your dream coming true
  • activities to help you see how great and how capable you really are
  • decision-making tips so you know you’re doing the right thing
  • easy-to-follow action planning to help you move forward steadily
  • motivational techniques to help you when the going gets tough

Annie shares her own experience of achieving her dream ‘while there’s still time’.

She says, ‘I couldn’t bear the thought of drawing my last breath never having finished my novel. At the age of 59, I finally published it!’

You can achieve your dream too, whatever it is.

Annie Weir

In her fifties, Annie Weir decided it was ‘now or never’ and invested time and money in an MA in Creative Writing. This led to her writing and publishing Judith Wants to be Your Friend, and in doing so she realised a life-long dream of becoming an author. Annie has combined her training and mentoring skills with her own success in ‘later life’ to develop Not Too Late at 58. This book and the series of programmes that follow help others realise their dreams (what ever they are) while there is still time.

Not Too Late at 58 - Annie Weir

    Introduction

    ––––––––

Three questions for you to ponder ...

First question – what will you most regret not having done as you breathe your last breath?

Second question – if you’re a person of a certain age, what do you want to change about your life now (assuming there is something) while there’s still time?

Third question – who do you need help from?

    ––––––––

    Now, please read on.

    ––––––––

Even if you don’t change anything about your life, this book will give you a chance to take stock of:

    what you are good at

    what you enjoy doing

what gives you the greatest sense of achievement

It will give you a chance to reflect on the things that didn’t work out:

    to acknowledge them

    to learn from them

    then to let them go

    ––––––––

Allow me to share with you three lightbulb moments

    The first lightbulb moment

About 10 years ago at a Cumbria Coaching Network meeting we were trying out a few coaching techniques. A question was posed:

‘What will you most regret not having done as you breathe your last breath?’

I knew straight away that I would regret not having finished and published the novel I had been writing for ages. I knew I had to have a go.

Well, having tinkered with it for ages (perhaps ‘procrastinated’ is a better word – or simply being terrified to share it with the world), I finally finished writing my novel. It’s a psychological thriller called Judith Wants To Be Your Friend.

‘If Judith decides to be your friend, she’ll make it happen.

She’ll find out what you do and where you go.

She’ll make sure she’s there too.’

This is the book that proves it’s not too late at 58.

Working with a self-publishing company, I published Judith Wants To Be Your Friend in the most professional way I could. It is available to buy on Amazon.

    The second lightbulb moment

January 2015: I wanted to change my working situation and found myself thinking, ‘I can’t change now – I’m 58, for heaven’s sake.’ Then I thought, ‘Get a grip, woman. It’s not too late at 58.’

That thought turned into the book you’re reading now – a sort-of interactive self-help book for people of a certain age (you don’t actually have to be 58!) to help them realise their dreams or to adjust their way of life in the light of changed or changing circumstances.

    The third lightbulb moment

I was on a self-publishing course when I realised that I needed help to publish and market my book:

I couldn’t do all the techie stuff

I couldn’t do all the marketing stuff

I needed help and so I asked for help

After that it immediately felt more real and more manageable. Some of the help I got was from people I know, who agreed to be case studies in this book. (More of them later.)

    ––––––––

So, here are those three questions again ...

What will YOU most regret not having done as you breathe your last breath?

If you’re a person of a certain age, what do you want to change about your life now while there’s still time?

Who do you need help from?

    Chapter 1

Why do we need a re-think?

    ––––––––

    Why now?

Many of my ideas take the form of idle daydreams:

I wish I didn’t have to get up at 6.15 tomorrow morning and drive 60 miles to teach all day then drive 60 miles back, get changed and go out networking feeling absolutely shattered. When I’m an author I’ll get up quite early, work for a bit, go to the gym, have lunch, work a bit more then have a nap before going out to enjoy the networking.

However, while I’m in this cycle – and mighty glad of the work – there is no time or energy left to devote to being an author and pursuing my dream lifestyle. Therefore a re-think is required.

A re-think needs to happen now because I’m getting older and I want to enjoy my dream as a reality. It needs to happen now because I’ll be 60 next year (I’ve had a birthday since starting this book). It needs to happen now because I’m worn out with all the travelling.

You may be thinking, ‘Well, lucky you for being so busy!’ But it’s not always like that of course. When I’m not busy I fret about not being busy and spend all my time thinking about the marketing I can do to get busy again.

I like working one-to-one with people, but there are so few people in Cumbria. I need to think wider.

For me it’s the lifestyle change I’m seeking. Just like 13 years ago when I left my ‘proper job’ to start my own training company, I now want to be an author and I want to mentor other people of a certain age to realise their dreams.

    Are we ever satisfied?

Maybe not, but what I know is that with every passing year there is less time to make the dream come true. At 58 it is NOT too late, and the proof is right here in this book.

I’ve given my reasons for wanting a change in career and lifestyle, but there are many reasons why people our age(-ish) might be looking for something else. I fit some (but not all) of the criteria below too.

    ––––––––

Here are a few reasons for needing a re-think

Not having enough money, savings or pension to retire any time soon

This is something that seems to be more and more common. Lots of people I know are in this sort of position and the causes are varied.
