Zambian Democracy and Political Struggles. A History of Zambia Politics and Environment. Zambia became independent in 1964 and is a republic governed by a president and a unicameral national assembly. It is a unitary state with an executive president who is both the head of state and government. After two decades of one-party rule, Zambia returned to multiparty elections in November 1991. These elections were won by the newly formed Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD), which replaced the United National Independence Party (UNIP) as the dominant political party in Zambia. Frederick J T Chiluba, a former trade union leader, was elected president.The MMD won 131 of the 150 seats in parliament, reducing UNIP to a handful of seats in the eastern province.
