Introduction
The ketogenic diet is not just a new idea, or fashionable diet plan, it has actually been around for 90 years. It was originally introduced to treat epilepsy. Today, it is used as a weight loss plan, and as a means of controlling blood sugars.
A ketogenic diet is fundamentally a high fat diet, with an average intake of protein and very low in carbs. The Atkins diet falls into the category of a ketogenic diet plan. Don't let the high fat part of this diet put you off, this is a sensible and healthy diet, that is a very efficient way of loosing excess weight.
Why the Ketogenic diet is so effective, is because of the metabolic state, known as Ketosis. Ketosis is when the body breaks down fat for energy. Raised levels of ketones in the blood are used by the body as fuel. This process happens when you reduce your carb intake.
The problem with eating carbohydrates is, it causes blood glucose levels to rise, which then cause an insulin response in the pancreatic glands. To cope with the excess blood glucose, the insulin disperses it, and stores it as fat, resulting in feeling hungry. These are known as carb-induced hunger spikes. The only way to cut these spikes down is to have a low carb intake, thus keeping blood glucose levels down. Put
