RELATED LITERATURE

Hearing impairment (whether congenital or acquired) consists in a decreased capacity to perceive normal sound. Individuals whose hearing is not functional in common life are considered deaf. The different levels of hearing loss can be classified as: light (loss of up to 40 dB); moderate (loss of between 40 and 70 dB); severe (loss of between 70 and 90 dB) and profound (hearing loss of more than 90 dB) deafness. (BSL) BRITISH SIGN LANGUAGE is a visual-gestural language which uses hand shapes, facial and body expression and gestures to express meaning. (SSE) SIGN SUPPORTED ENGLISH is used by people who become deaf after acquiring spoken language. If English is the persons first language they will often use signs taken from BSL but apply them in English word order accompanied by lip patterns. When using SSE, you speak and sign at the same time and the signs are actually used to support the spoken word. Many deaf people will use SSE as an aid to lip-reading. LIP READING is reading the visual clues of a spoken message. It includes movements of the lips, tongue, the lower jaw, the eyes, the eyebrows and facial expression, body language and gesture as these are all clues to the lip-reader. HANDS ON SIGNING allows the deaf blind person to follow the flow of signing by placing his or her hands on top of those of the signer and feeling the signs as they are formed. DEAFBLIND MANUAL ALPHABET is a method of spelling out words onto a deaf blind persons hand. Each letter is denoted by a particular sign or place on the hand. HEARING AIDS are electronic pieces of equipment that are put in the ear which have a microphone to amplify all sound received but cannot distinguish between voices and background noise. This process varying levels of sound depending on the hearing loss which can range from mild to profound.
