Introduction XUV 500


Mahindra XUV500 launched on Thursday, 29th Sept. 2011. Spent Rs 650 crores to develop, is the first product from its Chennai research and development centre. Produced at the Chakan plant, Pune.

Pronounced as Mahindra XUV500 with the last to 00 pronounced as alphabet OO, it symbolizes activeness and the agility besides the quickness it has as an SUV. Global design brings with Global standards SUV also has been tested to be perfect on many destinations including Europe, Australia and South Africa. Countrys first car from the Mahindra brand that is based on a monocoque chassis.

Single piece body in which the body and chassis are one piece.

Quality that Customer Want


Mileage
Loaded with 140bhp power. Mileage is 12kmpl in the city and 14 kmpl on the highways . ARAI certified mileage on the highway is 15.1 kmpl. Fuel tank capacity of this new Mahindra SUV is 70 litres.

Power
2179cc m Hawk diesel engine Challenge any off-road and the city traffic as well. 6-speed manual transmission and there is no automatic transmission option .

Acceleration & Pick-Up


Top speed of 185kmph. Six-speed manual gearbox. 4WD or All-wheel drive (AWD) enables the XUV 500 to take on any terrain with ease.

Interiors
Comfortable seating for seven people, two at the front, and three on the middle row and two at the rear. Two seats in the last row are also foldable. 6-inch touch screen monochrome/color display on the top. Dash also has a spacious glove box that can even accommodate a small laptop. mHawk engine that gives a low NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness).

Music system can be connected to an iPOD with the help of a USB port besides the Bluetooth connectivity for phone.
Air conditioner has fully automatic temperature control with dual HVAC

2179cc mHawk type. Maximum power out of 140bhp at 3750 rpm besides a maximum torque capacity of 330Nm at 1600-2800rpm. Engine has Micro Hybrid technology in place making it more fuel efficient.

Exteriors
SUV takes on the garb of a Cheetah. With jaw-shaped front grille, paw shaped door handles, bodylines of a pouncing Cheetah and bold lines, all make it a look alike of a Cheetah in motion.
Overall length of 4585mm, a width of 1890mm and it has an overall height measuring 1785mm. Impressive turning radius of 5.6m

Wheels
Five-spoke 17 inch alloy wheels have a tyre size of P235/65 R17 which are radial and tubeless. Tyre Tronics system that monitors the tyre pressure and warns if significant decrease in tyre pressure Spare wheel that has been hidden just below the boot.

Braking, Handling and Safety


Front and rear brakes are disk & caliper type. Anti-lock Braking system do not lock even in times of panic braking. Electronic Stability Program that keeps on track even on curvy turns. Also Hill Hold and Hill Descent control making it suitable even for hilly areas. Dual airbags both for the driver and the front passenger

Studying Global market
M&M XUV5OO has been designed, conceptualized and built in India itself. So, M&M will launch a new SUV tailored for its various global users. M&M will face competition from Hyundai Tucson, Nissan Qashaqai and General Motors Captiva in South Africa and Europe. After studying the markets of South Africa and Europe M&M have a strong proposition in XUV5OO. Studies reveal that in South Africa, the product requirement and emission norms are fairly similar to Indian market.

Market Feasibility
Also in South Africa there is a demand for products at every price point just like the Indian market. M&M, as a brand has some traction in South Africa and it is already known in some quarters for its pick-ups and SUVs.

Innovation for Global drive


Results
The introduction of this SUV definitely increased their market share . The SUV sales in South Africa constitute around 10% of the overall market and it is growing at 12-15% every year. M&M already has presence in South Africa and is selling around 4500 units every year with a market share of 3% in SUV and 2% in pick-ups. Although the pricing , distribution and brand imaging will be a tuff challenge. South Africa market could seem to be a little friendlier but Western European market would be difficult than South Africa.

M&M made an appropriate study about the Indian consumers requirement for an SUV which they did very well and eventually resulted in good demand and high sales in Indian market.

Inspite of good competition from existing market of SUVs in India, XUV5OO was successful because of its good study.

Reading Global market correctly


M&M was also successful in South Africa. They studied the African market requirement was similar to Indian market. M&M catered to customized requirements to global customers.
