COURSE DESCRIPTION AND PURPOSE: A developmental course concerned with the improvement of written communication skills. Students review grammar and mechanics, syntax, vocabulary, paragraph and essay organization, and reading skills. A pass/repeat grade will be awarded. REQUIRED TEXTS: COURSE RULES: 1. No assignment may be omitted. 2. Plagiarized work will receive a failing grade. Be advised that it is very obvious to English professors when something is not written in the student's style. 3. After three (3) absences and/or lateness a conference with instructor is required. 4. Late work will be accepted only under special circumstances and only when the student has communicated the reason prior to the class when the assignment is due. REQUIRED WORK: 1. Students are required to pass the exit exam at the end of the semester. The essay exam is written in class and is graded Pass/Fail by two instructors from the English Department, not myself. We will discuss in length the skills that must be demonstrated on the exit exam. 2. Frequent in-class writing and written responses to readings. 3. Class discussion and participation. 4. At home weekly reading and writing assignments. 5. Completion of work at home if not done so in class ENGLISH SKILLS WITH READINGS
