Outline for Informative Speech Autism Purpose: To inform the audience about autism.

Thesis: In order to better understand autism, one must be open minded, develop some level of patience, and be willing to do his/her own research. Organizational Pattern: Topical Introduction A. Attention Getter: According to Websters Compact Dictionary, autism is defined as A mental condition, present from early childhood, characterized by great difficulty in communicating and forming relationships with other people and in using language and abstract concepts. I define autism as always unique totally interesting sometimes mysterious disorder. B. Audience Relevance: Autism is a learning special need that impacts children worldwide. According to WebMD Health News, autism hits 1 in every 88 children in the US. Boys are more likely to have autism with a ratio of 1 to 54. C. Credibility: I live with autism every day. I make it breakfast, give it bathes, and get in trouble for it for things I dont do. D. Thesis: In order to better understand autism, one must be open minded, develop some level of patience, and be willing to do his/her own research. E. Preview: Today were going to learn 1. Why open-mindedness is important, 2. What kind of situations need more patience, and 3. Why doing research yourself is beneficial. Transition: Lets get started. II. Body A. Why is open-mindedness important? 1. We first need to have some knowledge of the characteristics of autism. Autism, like most disorders varies on a spectrum. On the lower end, it is consider being high functioning. On the higher end, it is considered being low functioning. Somewhere in the middle, you have a mixture of low and high functioning characteristics. The characteristics may include flapping of the arms and legs, very little speech or excessive amounts of speech, poor or great eye contact, a reserved personality, too friendly, and very hard time understanding concepts. 2. Because autism runs on a spectrum it is imperative to keep open-minded and think outside of the box. This is extremely important when trying to teach a new concept. One must be able to think of was to explain things in a way that they can understand without getting angry. Transition: On to my next topic, Patience. B. What type of situations need patience?

1. According to Autismsociety.org children with autism have a hard time expressing how they feel. Using word is a great challenge; so instead, they throw tantrums or shutdown completely. 2. An example of when to use patience is when Im teaching my brother. When he gets annoyed with school work he begins to throw things. Patience is key. Transition: On to my last point. C. Why doing research yourself is beneficial. 1. If child is a part of the public school system or youre just interested in learning more about autism, I recommended doing your own research. People are humans and humans make mistakes. To prevent yourself from experiencing disappointment just take the time to do your own research. Transition: We have taken a look today at the mysterious disorder called autism. III. Conclusion A. Brakelight: We have taken a look today at the mysterious disorder called autism. Though there are many down sides to autism Id like you to take a look at the genius that hide behind autism. B. Thesis/Review: In this speech I have explored the key factors that make comprehension of autism a little bit easier. Stay open-minded, gain some patience, and do research for yourself. C/D.
