Horizontal Projectile WS- Do all work on a separate sheet of paper with your name on it.

This assignment may be collected.

1.

An archer shoots an arrow horizontally with an initial speed of 45 m/s. How long does the arrow remain in the air if the archer shoots the arrow from a height of 1.35 meters? If a projectile is launched horizontally from a height of 100 meters, how fast must the projectiles initial velocity be if it is have a horizontal range of 150 meters?

2.

3.

A projectile fired horizontally from a cliff has an initial velocity of 35 m/s. After 1.5 seconds, what are the components of the projectiles displacement in the horizontal and vertical direction from the position it was fired from? vi = 35 m/s y-component of distance x-component of distance

4.

A hunter aims directly at a target (on the same level) 120 meters away. If the bullet leaves the gun at a speed of 250 meters per second, by how much vertical distance will it miss the target?

Horizontally Fired Projectiles The cliff divers of Acapulco push off horizontally from rock platforms about 35 meters above the water, but they must clear rocky outcrops at water level that extend out into the water 5.0 meters from the base of the cliff directly under their launch point. What is the minimum push off speed that is necessary to just barely miss the rocky outcrops?

A burglar is attempting to flee from the legal authorities and finds himself in a predicament. The burglar is atop the roof of a building being chased by an officer of the law. The burglars speed is 4.5 meters per second. The next building over is 6.2 meters away and the difference in the height between buildings is 4.8 meters. If the burglar runs horizontally off the roof, will the burglar be able to commit more crimes in the future or will it be a tragic ending to a life of crime?
Hints: How much time in the air does the burglar have if he is to safely make it to the next building? Is this time enough to cover the distance need at the speed the burglar is running at?

3.

A bullet is fired horizontally from a height of 78.4 meters and hits the ground 2400 meters away. Determine the velocity (speed and the angle) that the bullet strikes the ground with.

4.

A rescue plane drops a package of emergency rations to a stranded party of explorers as seen in the diagram below.

a)

b)

If the plane is traveling horizontally at 40.0 m/s at a height of 100 meters above the ground, where does the package strike the ground relative to the point at which it was released? What are the horizontal and vertical components of the packages velocity at the instant it strikes the ground?
