A strength, including allowing K to suggest some lessons by asking questions

Continued Instructional techniques, class exercise: Comprehension, brought up by K regarding the election. She was a bit unsure about the difference in electoral votes and popular vote. She drew a great map of the country, accurate and proportioned to help visualize what had happened. Feedback:
Thank you for taking time to answer her question and encouraging her to continue to ask questions and process until she had a better handle on it. I was pleasantly surprised that she was so informed and wanted to know more. Thank you for fostering her curiosity and guiding her to a better understanding. This type of comprehension of her world is valuable to K.Have you considered using a current event as a warm-up each day? Reading and discussing would really give her a boost in comprehension. Nice review before she read this passage for the second read. Stopping her at the first sentence to remind her of phrasing and use of punctuation was appropriate. You're question, Why did I stop you? allowed her to think about how she was reading and respond accurately. It was obvious as she continued to read that she was cognizant of reading with a bit more expression but also using punctuation to make sense of each sentence. Good review at the end. K mentioned that she found an answer to the comprehension question she couldn't answer yesterday. K seemed happy that she improved her time by 10 seconds. Having her review the first paragraph so you could point out some real improvements from yesterday was great. I really appreciate that K recording her own score on the grid. K generated discussion so she can write a paper that can be read at her eligibility/IEP meeting. What a great idea for her to think about and a great topic to use in addressing composition. Thank you for supporting this and helping her through the 5 step writing process starting with the brainstorming.

Reading Fluency, Read Naturally, second read

Composition: discussion of brainstorming process for an essay about K's disability and how it affects her participation in her previous public school experience. Fluency: phrases from Great Leaps

Nice way to help K become more conscious of chunking of words as she reads. Nice encouragement, appropriate praise and then suggestions.

Comprehension: vocabulary. Review of Nice review of vocabulary that K has worked with but previously studied words, encouragement to doesn't have solidly yet. discuss meanings or ask questions Contextual Reading and comprehension: Passages from Bridge to Terebithia Great way to spend the last several minutes of tutorial. You offer her much support, encouraging her to ask questions for clarification and asking her questions to assure yourself and K that she is understanding concepts

K really enjoys tutorial, even though you are forcing her to face some of her weakest academic areas. She is so open to your constructive criticism and instruction. You work perfectly with this EL student, offering appropriate cuing, processing time, suggestions and support. It's nice to see that there is some humor in this class, as well.
