Dear Members of the CPRIT Oversight Committee: On December 18, 2012, we asked the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) to fully address concerns about processes and operations prior to future grants being awarded or any curent awards being finalized. At this time, we understand cooperation with current reviews, implementation of recommended changes and enactment of CPRIT governance reforms have either been completed or are underway.
While that process continues, we have been made aware that there are 25 researcher recruitment grant awards that CPRIT committed to on August 2 and December 5, that will move eminent researchers into Texas after these grants are ftnalized. We appreciate members of the Senate Finance and House Appropriations Committees addressing this issue and believe that CPRIT has sufficiently complied with our December directive to justi$ moving forward with this extraordinary priority. Therefore, we authorize the CPRIT Oversight Committee to finalize the contracts necessary to complete these recruitment processes and ensure that the state honors its commitment to these researchers.
are still concerned about This decision is not made without serious and thorough deliberation. ensuring the accountability of CPRIT before any nev/ grants are awarded, including the complete in-rplementation of all reforms. Furthermore, since all nominating institutions remain under legislative ovrsight, the public investment of these recruitment grants are protected by state budgetary oversiglit. As a rsult, elected officeholders retain strict control over the use of these public funds. Accountability to the legislature concerning the use of these grant funds is therefore assured.
'We
We appreciate the work CPRIT is doing to restore confidence in the important work of developing more effective cancer treatment. Please keep our offices informed of your progress.
Sincerely,
/ck
