Sergej Birjukov

The End of August

In the last days of August
On the eve of school
You remember
The white shirt
The red tie
Given by brother
The scent of apples in the briefcase
The whiteness of a notebook sheet
The cages for ciphers
The lines for letters
The read in the summer textbooks
The expeditions to distant countries
On the geographical atlas
The comprehension of physics laws
In the cold river
The smell of baked potatoes
The smoke of a bonfire
The Moscow girl
Who came for vacation
Who said that anatomy
Is studied in the 10th class
Ah, really!
End of August
Song Soon it is autumn
Behind the windows is August
How does it continue
In this unbelievable play

***
Fleeing wind of morning
To wake up astonished
Here is darkness
Green mills crosses
Fog of village outskirts
Audible
The crunch of an apple

Return
Possible

***
But not
That does
Resemble denial
If denial
Could
Deny itself
If it were like that
It were
And in us
Ourselves
Exists
But not

***
PoEtry
Is an
OffEnse
Not subject to
ExPosure

***
As if resolved is
The equation of the sun
What is wind for
And rain with snow
And desert frost
And a cloud of vapor
God knows the remaining

Another
Another summer
Departed bird-like
Track its a pair of scars
On the heart
Cross resembling
Optical sight of a rifle
There really are exact shooters

***
Lighting one cigarette
From anothers tip
Inhaling
Observing how blazes up in darkness
A fiery-red light
Grinding pebbles
Of yesterdays day
As instantly
As a flash of magnesium
As a Latin saying

Sphinx
Taciturn sphinx
At the maritime gates
of St. Petersburg

you meet sailors

with silence
you attentively listen to
their conversations
about distant countries
you remember
as though a computer
and then will retell
descendants
likewise silently
stillness does not frighten you
and rush of waves
and mysterious
quiver of silken cloth
on hips of a girl
who came out towards
one returning from sail
he will tell you
hello sphinx
and you likewise silently
will answer him with a greeting
and then he will understand
that he returned home

***
At John Cage
I looked
He was old
From the year 12
(thousand nine hundred)
and laughed
without sound
like a pterodactyl
he said something
but not that fluently
chain of circumstance
permanent
anarchy is the mother of order

see your reflection in the golden brass

your childhood genius reappears
your lover stands there beckoning
William Blake frock-coated strides across the heath
the darkness of silence becomes deafening then bursts into birdsong
watch the grass grow, lush wet and blue in the morning mist
the sunny lawn is mown at a stroke of sunlight from cloud
the bigot is mute
the tyrant is dead, assassinated as he drips his poison into the peoples

lamp and the flag is burnt to a cinder

lamp and the word disappears completely,
leaving a pool of black water in a puff of smoke
lamp and behold a way through the forest, light through the trees
lamp and hear the slashing of rain on the ocean roof
lamp and write nonstop for three days
lamp and write nonstop for three weeks
lamp and write nonstop for three years
lamp and fly there and back on a cheap hour return
lamp and walk past the shelves of a vast library
lamp and go to the poetry section
lamp and under L find a book in 7 volumes by the Lux poet entitled Rub the Lamp
lamp but be careful about the blisters
lamp rub the lamp yourself!

I write
its a quick fix
I must
I seek an answer
I love to eat fish
my father said: Dont!
I die
of the history of poetry
I cant stop
its what I do
I wrote
the sentence has not yet come to an end
its always a beautiful day but YOU cant see it
I was a paper boy in 68
my eyesight was too bad for me to be a Fleet Air Arm pilot
I couldnt give it up
it is my longest-serving friend
all things are transient
my father never listened to me
my mother always listened to me
I want to preserve the present as the past
I am a camera
it is an adventure
I am a perfectionist, the world is imperfect
and poetry is an approach to perfection
the road of a thousand pages begins with a single letter
of the Beats
of the Mersey Poets
they came to our school to give poetry readings
it was something different to do
nobody else did
it was a dare
it always gives you something to do when youre waiting
I wanted to rebel
I read Ariel in the school library and then stole it
my lifes development stopped at puberty
and I have tried to remain a teenager
its a cheap hobby
cannabis and LSD opened my mind to the secrets colours of Otherland
I read an purple-covered anthology by Geoffrey Grigson
with poems by Ginsberg, Ferlinghetti, Corso, Popa,
Adrian Henri, Rimbaud, Apollinaire, Baudelaire
and it blew my mind
its fun
I can write
I cant write
its Sisyphus work and Im a masochist
its easy I do it off the cuff and Im lazy
I dream of being rich and famous
Im bored
I love YOU
I cant express myself in any other way
it opens my eyes, my ears, my heart, my mind
I dont know why I write
I want to wrote just one great poem
I dont understand life
Im afraid of death

44

I write because I want to escape

I write because its a habit
I write because I used to make comic strip books when I was a kid
my masterpiece was called Drago the Gunslinger
I write because its a way to create and keep secrets
I write because it tells me new things
I write because poetry is a mirror
I write because others have before me
I write because I believe the world needs to be changed and I cant do it
I write because I hate 1st world capitalist imperialism
I write because there is no scientific formula for the sound of the rain
I write because I believe in magic
I write because I grew up with the Beatles, the Stones and Bob Dylan
and was captivated by the spirit of their songs
I write because a voice inside talks to me when my mind is silent
I write because it is an act of self-affirmation
and I like breathing rarefied mountain air
in long deep breaths
I write because the poem is a journey and I am a traveller
I write because it opens windows and doors
I write because its a sexual act
I write because I dont have any children other than hundreds of poems
I write because Im addicted to poetry and I dont want to kick the habit
I write because I cant play any other musical instrument
I write because its a way to explore myself
I write because I love to lie with truth
I write because Im a gatherer
I write because I follow the Great Spirit
I write because it used to get me girls
I write because it sets me free
I write because Im a Houdini
I write because it relieves the sadness
I write because it heightens happiness
I write because I am obsessed by writing
I write because I cant think of anything else to do
I write because it lets off steam
I write because it makes me feel like God
I write because it gives me a place to hide
I write because I am timid as a deer
I write because I am fearless as a lion
