Ancient Egypt
Time Frame: 10 class periods about 90 minutes each. Group Size: Large Groups Summary: This unit explores several aspects of ancient Egypt. It covers areas such as; hieroglyphics, mummification, architecture, religion, and history. There are several hands on lessons, web activities, and many other tools for your students to develop a better understanding of Ancient Egypt. Have fun and enjoy the endless possibilities of this unit!

USOE Core Standard: Social studies-Standard 1: Students will understand how ancient civilizations developed and how they contributed to the current state of the world. o Objective 2: Evaluate how religion has played a central role in human history from ancient times to today. o Objective 3: Explain how modern governments can trace some of their attributes to the systems of power, authority, and governance established in ancient civilizations. o Objective 4: Analyze how the earliest civilizations created technologies and systems to meet community and personal needs. Visual Arts-6th Grade-Standard 4 (Contextualizing): The student will interpret and apply visual arts in relation to cultures, history, and all learning o Objective 2-Connect various kinds of art with particular cultures, times, or places. Language Arts-6th Grade-Standard 7 (Comprehension): Students understand, interpret, and analyze narrative and informational grade level text. o Objective 1 -Identify purposes of text, reading, and identify authors purpose. o Objective 2 -Apply strategies to comprehend text. o Objective 3 -Recognize and use features of narrative and informational text.

Student Prior Knowledge: 1) Basic computer skills. 2) Reading and comprehension of at least 5th grade level words. 3) Must be able to compose writings in which the subject and purpose are cohesive and clear. 4) Geometry vocabulary 5) Understanding of measurement 6) Basic computation skills 7) Basic use of art mediums and applications. Content & Language Objectives:

Students will be competent and knowledgeable about the history and culture of Ancient Egypt. Students learn more about Social & Civic Responsibility Thinking & Reasoning Oral Communication

Instructional Procedures: Begin each class period with this vocabulary review activity: (attached is our format) Type: Read around review

How to Play: Divide the class up into small groups, this can be done by giving each student a playing card, groups can be made by classifying students into groups according to color, suit, or number, have the students create a circle and sit in these groups by having each of the students choose a card/strip of paper. Whichever student has the longest hair can come to the front of the class and pick up a group of the papers they then pass the papers out among themselves. The first paper which was labeled so informs the reader that it was the first paper and to begin reading.

The students continue following the papers and practice their vocabulary. Have each group begin more advanced groups can play the game again if they finish before the others.

Directions for word strips: Using the newly introduced vocabulary words create word strips using the following format: Make sure to mark the first card by writing: I am the first paper on it. Read aloud: I am looking for a word which means example: A massive structure containing tombs built especially in ancient Egypt with a square base and four triangular faces meeting at a point. To which the next person would respond by reading their strip of paper: I have the word ex: Pyramid . I am looking for a word which means: ex. Scientists who learn about the past by finding and studying objects from long ago. I have the word ex. Archeologists . I am looking for a word which means. And so on. Make enough for each group to have 1 full copy of questions and answers. After whole group instruction, divide students into group so that they may rotate between stations. Transcribe a Story. We will make own hieroglyphics and you will translate the story and idea. Write your own epitaph: Book of the dead. Create own story of what you would want on your tombstone/wall .

Mummy Mask: Create own creative and new mummy mask of how you would have wanted your tomb to look. Important Egyptian mural/collage: make a collage of what you feel is important in Egyptian History. Using Magazines, Pictures, Etc.

small groups as students. "Who Wants to Be a Pharaoh?" **Mathematics: The teacher will set out clumps of play dough and a set of directions in front of each space (group size depends on the teacher. It is designed to require very little teacher instruction. You may choose to place kids in groups any way you wish. However, I do not recommend groups any larger than 4 or 5 kids.
