This Vector Life

What is my trajectory?

How has your world & experiences shaped your dreams and aspirations?
Reflecting on the UC Personal Statement you constructed in Joeys class your task is to choose at least four experiences (forces) that have shaped your dreams and aspirations. Because vectors have both a magnitude (length) and a direction (bearing) they will represent how your life experiences have pushed you towards your final destination. In other words, some life experiences have a large impact (magnitude) and help shape your dreams while other experiences distract you from your dreams by taking you off course (bearing). It is your task to determine how both the magnitude and direction of these forces are moving you towards your final destination.

Magnitude

In order to represent how these invisible forces have shaped your life you will construct a Vector Map that will illustrate your journey. The Vector Map will be constructed using Photoshop and will have tabloid dimensions (11 by 17 inches) similar to the Transforming Your Identity project. Below are the components of the project.

Part I: The Vector Map

1. Origin - Home Home is (0,0) This is where your journey begins.

2. Destination - Where are you going? Your job is to choose a place (physical location) that represents your dreams and aspirations.

3. A Direct Path My Trajectory Construct a Vector in both component form and standard from that will provide a direct path from your origin to your final destination. o Magnitude? You can use http://www.mapcrow.info to calculate the distance between locations. o Bearing? To find your Standard Position (and Bearing) you will need to use both latitude and longitude by constructing a right triangle. Though this vector is the shortest path to your destination it doesn't accurately describe your journey. The destination is the same but the journey is different.

4. My Journey - The Vectors in my life Each experience/vector in your life must include the following and be to scale: o Title for the experience o Component Form o Standard Form: Magnitude and Direction (Bearing) In addition the following must be included: o Two Vectors must be related by a Scalar (for example 2a, -1b) o Two Vectors must be Orthogonal o Two adjoining vectors also need to be solved using the Law of Cosines. o Prove that My Journey matches a Direct Path by adding the Vectors together - in Legend

Part II: The Legend

The Legend includes all the mathematics (written work) involved in finding your Vectors. For each experience you must show how you calculated both the component form and the standard form. In addition to showing the math you must also explain in words why you chose that magnitude and direction for that particular experience (India had a large influence on my life (magnitude) because I realized that education was central to personal growth and development, therefore pointing me in the right trajectory (bearing)). Your ability to choose vectors that represent what is happening invisibly will demonstrate your understanding of what a vector is. The mathematics for the additional elements in My Journey (Scalar, Orthogonal Vectors, and Law of Cosines) must also be completed in this section. Furthermore, you will need to prove that My Journey matches a Direct Path by adding them together to find the same result. Ideally, the mathematics should be done using Equation Editor and then transferred over to a Photoshop File that has the same dimensions as the Vector Map Tabloid. The Theme should also correspond. The final deliverable will be posted on your Weebly site (weebly.com) and Dropbox and will be due Friday, May 24th.
