Introduction
Morph means to undergo or cause to undergo a gradual

process of transformation. Nokia Morph Device is theoretical future mobile device based on Nanotechnology. Result of joint efforts of Nokia Research Center (NRC) and Cambridge university. The morph demonstrate how future mobile device might be stretchable and flexible, allowing the user to transform their mobile devices into radically different shaped.

Introduction (contd.)
Journey so far.
Telephone was invented by A.G.Bell in 1876.
Mobile phones were first demonstrated in 1973. Today mobile phones are part of our daily life!!!

Introduction (contd.)
So whats next??
Nokia Morph Devices.!!

Theory
Concept of Nokia Morph

Theory (contd.)
Sensing
Interaction with surroundings by the help of

Nanosensors. Sensing= Wearable sensor + NFC(Near Field Communication). Wearable sensor for sensing the surroundings(can be worn on wrists)!! NFC Technology would relay information by touch from sensor to phone, with maximum data rate of 424 Kbits/s.

Various Technologies Used

Nano-enabled energy
Nanotechnology holds out the possibility that the

surface of a device will become a natural source of energy via covering of Nanograss structures that harvest solar power. At the same time new high energy density storage materials allow batteries to become small and thinner.
High energy density batteries are quicker to recharge

and endure more recharge cycles.

Various Technologies used(contd.)

Sensing surfaces
Empowers users to examine environment around them

using nanosensors.
Gaining insight into bio-chemical traces and processes,

since nanoscale is the scale of fundamental processes of life.

Ability to tune into the environment and help in decision

making.
Knowing the freshness of fruit before eating it!!!

Various Technologies Used(contd.)

Stretchable Electronics
ZnO nanowire array

Various Technologies Used(contd.)

Why ZnO??
ZnO easily forms a mesh with the Si substrate.
Withstands extreme deformations. Economical Eco- friendly, i.e. recyclable.

Features and Characteristics

Flexibility
Fibril proteins are woven into a three dimensional

mesh that reinforces thin elastic structures.

Using the same principle behind spider silk, this

elasticity enables the device to literally change shapes and configure itself to adapt to the task at hand.
A folded design would fit easily in a pocket and can be

used as traditional handset whereas unfolded larger design could display more detailed information, and incorporate input devices such as keyboards and touch pads.

Features and Characteristics (contd.)

Self-cleaning
Nanoflowers

Features and Characteristics (contd.)

Nanoflower
Compound of certain elements like Silicon carbide etc.

those results in formations which in microscopic view resemble flowers . These formations are nanometer long and thick, can only be observed through electron microscope.
Each flower is made up of nanorods 15nm wide. Made by blasting Zn containing compound with

ultrasound, making it highly hydrophobic.

Features and Characteristics (contd.)

Nanograss consisting of tiny processed silicon grass,

also helps in self-cleaning.

Droplets on the surface can be controlled by applying

electric charges.
The individual blades of grass are too small .

Features and Characteristics (contd.)

Advanced Power Sources
Surface of device can become the source of energy by

covering it with Nanograss.

In Nanograss, the liquid electrolyte is isolated, hence

electrochemical reaction does not take place until power is actually needed by the device. So, the battery doesnt degrade over time.
Nanograss based batteries are ideal for long term and

higher capacity.

Sensing the environment
Piezoelectric nanowires array senses the surface.
Actually, Zno has piezoelectric and n-type

semiconductor properties.
Nokia is exploiting these qualities to achieve strain-

based electromechanical transducersideal for touch-sensitive (even direction-sensitive) surfaces.

Potential Research Areas Of Nokia Morph Technology

Some of the questions which are worth research are: How to fabricate mechanical structures that can be both transparent and compliant despite containing electronic and optical functions?
Which materials should be used so that they are high

energy density storage materials and also allow batteries to become smaller and thinner, and also quicker to recharge and able to endure more charging cycles?

Conclusion
Theoretical Future device based on nanotechnology. Aimed to show the flexibility and versatility of the future mobile

devices.

Exciting features which will make it an essential device in

everydays life.

Revolutionize the communication industry.

Nokia Morph Device=Transparent and flexible mobile phone + Sensing device + computing device + communication device, which gets energy from solar cells.
