Take a look at the articles we discussed from the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). I wrote the meanings we came up with in class. Write anything we have read this year that relates to a human rights violation. Since you will be writing an essay based on research, you will need cite your sources (more to come), you need to know what article you got your support from. For now, the best way to do it is to change the font color. Here is a reminder of what we read. Africas World of Forced Labor (Fishing) Acid Attacks, Poison: What Afghan Girls Risks Going to School Sudans Deadly Struggle A New Life (Emmanuel Jal) Lost Boys, Lost Girls A Long Walk to Water Warchild (Poem/Song) Japanese Camps Cuba at a Crossroads Article 1 All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. Our Definition Every human born has certain rights. All humans are free and equal. Every human has feelings, so they should be treated well The Japenese Americans were not treated equal and were definitely not treated free. They were put in these camps for something Japan did and because they look like the people who bombed Pearl Harbor. Children as young as 7 years old were forced by the "good guys," the SPLA, to fight in the Sudanese Civil War and many died. The kids were given drugs so they would

become dependent on the SPLA. The children also were put in the front lines to make it easy to get shot down. Emmanuel Jal was forced to be a child soldier, Jal was forced to take the drugs and was either an escapee or was rescued. Many children volunteered to be soldiers because they didn't have any food. Article 2 Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration, without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status...

Our Definition Every human born, with no exceptions, are guaranteed human rights. In other words, there is absolutely no reason to deny a person his/her rights. In Afghanastan, girls were not educated, and worse than that they were in danger of acid being thrown in their faces and their water being poisoned. The first day that their school was opened a grenade was thrown in it and over one hundred girls were killed. People were scared that if girls were educated they would believe they were being treated unfairly and do something about it. When the school for girls started, 90% of them could not write their own name. The Japanese Americans were put in these internment camps because they were of Japanese decent. They looked like the people who did the bombing of Pearl Harbor so they were discriminated against and put in a jail like environment. Also, half of the Japanese Americans were children. Article 3 Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person. Our Definition Every human has the right to live and be safe. These girls in Afghanastan were not safe. They were in danger of being killed from acid, poison or even hand grenades. All because they wanted an education. In Sudan, Africa, southern and northern Sudan were against each other trying to rule

over the land, water resources and over religion. The northern half was Arab, they wanted the whole country to follow Islamic law. The southern half was either Chritian or followed the religion of their tribe, they just did not want to follow Islamic law. Southern Sudan was not safe. The north started bombing, invading and were systematically killing the citizens of the south.the northern Arabs, called Janjaweeds, were dominating the Sudanese government. These children are, again, forced into the front lines of battle so they are easily shot down. They are given guns as kids and forced to fight against someone who hates their guts. The children are used because they obey the adults. The people in Cuba were not safe. They had to risk being imprisoned for speaking their mind. Article 4 No one shall be held in slavery or servitude; slavery and the slave trade shall be prohibited in all their forms. Our Definition You cannot buy or sell a human. No human should be a slave or forced to work. In Ghana, Africa children such as Mark Kwadwo (6 years old), are sold by their parents for $20 a year. They are called indentured servants and they are illegal. Children like Mark, are forced to work on fishing boats on Lake Volta. There ore other places kids are forced to work, examples are fisheries, quarries, cocoa and rice plantations and street cart pushers in abandoned gem mines. These kids work for 14 hours a day seven days a week. Their "owners" can beat the kids, the kids are not educated, or given basic human needs. They are not fed and scarily underweight, they are not dressed or cared for. This happens in developing countries, such as places in Latin America, Asia and Africa. Article 5 No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or

punishment. Our Definition You cannot intentionally hurt or kill someone. You cannot force someone to do something that is harmful to his or her mind or morals.(Ideas in life) "Owners" of the indentured servants can beat these children, and starve them regularly. They are intentionally hurting these children for doing a job wrong. The Sudanese tribes were tortured and intentionally killed and were forced to be Islamic and if they didn't they were killed. They hid in their houses, when Sudan was bombed the survivors walked from here to there on bare feet. The Lost Boys and the Lost Girls were forced to walk thousands of miles on bare feet to Ethiopia, back to Sudan, then to Kenya and then finally were flown to places like America for better lives. They were tortured when they were forced to cross a crocodile infested river while being shot at, and many of them were unable to swim. Article 6 Everyone has the right to recognition everywhere as a person before the law. Our Definition Human rights should always come before the law. FDR allowed the U.S. military to break the laws of the U.S. constitution and put the Japanese Americans in internment camps. This is Executive Order 9066 that allowed the U.S. military to do this. Article 7 All are equal before the law and are entitled without any discrimination to equal protection of the law. All are entitled to equal protection against any discrimination in violation of this Declaration and against any incitement to such discrimination. Our Definition

Article 8 Everyone has the right to an effective remedy by the competent national tribunals for acts violating the fundamental rights granted him by the constitution or by law. Our Definition Everyone has the right to an effective solution from someone who is able to make decisions when the law is not being followed. The people of Cuba could not speak to Fidel Castro about the things they didn't like. Like, not being able to talk bad about Castro on their blogs on the Internet. Having to risk imprisonment just to speak their mind online. Castro is not the person to talk to even though he is the one in charge.
