Marjorie Alexandre World History IIH Imperialism in India According to the American Dictionary imperialism is a policy of extending a country's

power

and influence through diplomacy or military force. When a sudden change was made to India when British took over many new things were improved and others were very disappointing. The British had plans to change and make things better for India to get the people smarter but it was all part of unjustly of imperialism. Before it all happened France and Great Britain competed in having interests in India in the early 18th century. Great Britain won over France so they went after India. In the late 1850s the British had many intentions for trying to take over India. They wanted to educate the people and try to get the people to speak the same language. They ended losing to India what they thought they were going to win. Economically, Britain was not a powerful country and India was a rich country with huge natural resources and abundant spices. Britain also wanted raw materials and India had a vast amount. They wanted to trade cotton with Indonesia and they didnt have any cotton so additionally they took over India to get their cotton, raw materials and finally traded with Indonesia. They took control on the country of India until the late 1940s. The Britishs arrival to India was a very painful experience for the Indians. Many Indians got diseases that the British brought to their place. The diseases played vital roles in their societies. Many of them died from the diseases that they were exposed to. Their sickness included tuberculosis, cholera, venereal disease, measles, whooping cough, influenza and the common cold. Their biggest disease was smallpox. Many Indians kept on getting their diseases

because they never knew that the British were the ones who brought the disease. The ones that they admit they got from the British were syphilis and other venereal diseases. When the British first took over India it was treasured for its potential than its actual profit. India became an important supplier for the British. They had over 300 million people buying the British Goods. To keep their customers they set up restrictions that prevented the Indian economy from moving on its own. They had a rule that no Indians were allowed to buy the British Goods and they couldnt compete with anything that they already had. While India was colonized by Britain they were no longer able to do what they wanted to do without checking with the Britain first to make sure that everything was okay and that they were supposed to be doing such. While British were ruling India there were many positive and negative effects that happened in India. Religiously, there were many changes, the British brought Christian missionaries to India with the intentions that they will turn most of the populations into Christianity. They mostly tried to convince the poor into becoming Christians. The attempt to have the Indians be interested in Christianity and unfamiliar religions was successful even though many of them didnt accept it. Some Indians gladly accepted it while others were very hostile, in turn giving collisions and difference of opinion. Overall positives included developments of the infrastructure and that included roads, railways, bridges, schools and hospitals. They reduced banditry, worked on ending slavery and established a monetary system. Negativities included the British capturing India in the guise of traders to loot the resources and wealth attacking the dignity.

India was ruled by the British for about 200 years. The British took over India and they were starting to not be satisfied with what was going on. As a result of how bad they were feelings, they formed a large group and revolted against the British. Many leaders stood up to British so because of them many others were able to stand up to armed forces. There many positive and negative times but after 200 years India gained independence from them on the 15th of August 1947. To accomplish their mission and actually be independent many lives were lost and sacrificed for the achievement. The efforts of the leaders were paid off and the sacrifices all paid off. India was able to gain freedom from the British and progress until today. After the British left, India was in a devastating condition. They were left with very little conditions. They were out of electricity and only major cities had electricity. The people were not really educated only 15 percent of them actually had an education after the British left. Millions of people were killed when they were trying to get of the British people and about 16 million people came from Pakistan because of the destitute refugees created by the British. At the same time many things changed for the better. Women were given the right to vote and important Indians started caring more about the value of independence. By the late 1970s India was self-sufficient in manufacturing. Foreign powers took an interest in India which means new ways of transportation and communication. Modern technology was introduced with people with a high level of education. The British made mistakes while they were trying to run an empire but legacies were left. Many people died but the country is changed and will never be the same again. In my opinion, imperialism in India was a good and bad thing that happened to India. After the British left India, the Indians were able to take care of themselves and not having to worry about anyone else taking care of them. They were independent and all the hard work that

they put through was all worth it. I do think that they shouldve started earlier instead of waiting over 200 years after the British killed most of them. It was all worth the while and at the end they were able to get the British out of India.
