12th Grade Advisory Week by Week Week #1 8/13-8/16

Tuesday 8/13o Teacher will introduce self with a few key facts. This will be a model of how to introduce yourself. o Programs will be signed and passed out to students o Pass out Composition Books and have students copy program on the first page o Teacher will also distribute Advisory Syllabus and review with the students. Wednesday 8/14o Collect the Advisory Syllabus and review key concepts/expectations o Pass out and review CHS student expectations o Pass out and discuss Individual Graduation Plans (IGPs) and student transcripts and review how to fill out form and keep track of classes taken and to determine academic needs and courses for the rest of the year. Thursday 8/15o Review How to Choose Just the Right Book for Independent Reading (put handout on projector and review and share). Remind students of the Independent reading component of the advisory and that they will be responsible for supply their own reading materials. o Continue and complete the IGP. o Begin Spacebook activity if time Permits (pass out handouts and have students complete the Spacebook handouts). Friday 8/16o Share some Book Choice suggestions. Some students may actually bring in books to share with other students (book swap). o Continue and complete Spacebook activity and share in small groups if time permits. Tuesday 8/20o Teacher will pass out and review briefly with class the Instructions for the Senior Advisory Portfolio requirements. o Teacher will also pass out and review the A-G Requirements handouts o Review/Discuss Character Lesson #1: Constructive LanguageCompliments & Criticism on overhead. Have students list some of their own responses to compliments & criticisms in their comp book. Ask students to model what they have learned in pairs or small groups. Have students use their comp book to also answer the Technology Point question: What will your language say about you? Wednesday 8/21o Quickly review Senior Portfolio Requirements again o Use overhead to Introduce Independent Reading Policy and Procedures. o Review Purpose of 12th grade advisory and discuss its importance Thursday 8/22 o Review Independent Reading Policy briefly o Review and discuss Character Lesson #2: Back to School Poster #2 from Speak Your Peace: The Civility Project on Listening. Use overhead to share and discuss information. Give students @ 3 minutes to respond to one of the bulleted quotes and then share out in class. o Pass out and review handouts on Creating a planner/planning sheets for academic work and how to organize class binders for periods 1,3,5 and 2,4,6 using course syllabi. *Note: This is Back to School Night Friday 8/23o Review Reflection instructions on overhead

Students will use this strategy in journaling after their Independent Reading this week. (Approx. 5 min) An alternative to this might be to use sample Reading Journal. o Students and teachers engage in Independent Reading for approximately 15 minutes, after which students, journal in a section of their composition book set aside for Independent Reading. o Review Etiquette Handout on Greetings and First Impressions on overhead and discuss as a class. Have students get up and move around the classroom to practice Networking (question #3) using professional etiquette. Students will have 3-one minute interactions with other students in the class. The teacher will moderate and time keep. After students return to their seats have them journal @ the experience. o Explain rules for Binder check and have students complete a peer binder check of Periods 1,3,& 5 binder(s). Use the +, , scoring system for this scoring period. No actual points will be given until the 5 week check. This is just to help keep students on track and up to date with course binders. Use Bridging the Gap discussion questions to help facilitate discussion and journaling in comp book on bullying. o Review rules for Binder check and have students complete a

This is just to help keep students on track and up to date with course binders. Wednesday 8/28 o Independent Reading and Journaling o Use overhead to share and discuss Back to School Poster #3 Character Lesson #3: Dont Gossip Handout. Discuss and have students copy one discussion topic question and respond to it in their comp book. o Pass out and review Student Led Conference packet. Students should begin work on completing this packet to use as a script when presenting to their parents at the PHBAO Conferences on Thursday, September 19, 2013. Have students first free write then discuss the topic of What are the effects of 9/11 throughout the years? And into the future? o Peer binder check for periods 2,4,&6 binder(s). Use Messages Across Time and Messages that Matter worksheet to help facilitate discussion. Have students choose one quote to write down and journal about in their comp books. o Continue small group book circle and sharing.
